Be sure to read the linked letter from CDFA.

Interesting that racetracks are exempt from the restrictions.

Separate ecosystem? And access to the backside is pretty restricted.

I wonder if there is merit in giving potentially exposed horses natural vitamin E at the dose for neurologic horses before they show symptoms
 or maybe everyone already is.

It is and it isn’t. Once the horses are on the backside, it is a completely separated environment, but horses come in and out from the farm all the time - both pony horses and racehorses. Rehab facilities aren’t necessarily specific to just racehorses (the ones that have training tracks and such obviously are) so you have the potential for exposure there. The risk is definitely lower, but not non-existent.

Just spitballing but I’m sure SM checks, and if anyone falls through the cracks they probably wouldn’t allow a trainer/barn to come back for the big tournaments. That’s a huge reason not to break their rules.

What a freaking nightmare. I feel so sorry for all the affected horses and owners.

oh I think I might have an idea of who the eventer is. Are they based in California?

hope your boy recovers quickly <3

Yes. Close to Galway.

It’s also a nightmare for vets. Every horse they test, they must wear a hazmat suit, somehow get back to where they can clean up and change, write a report and get the sample to FedEx by 4:30. In California traffic. And they are forbidden from seeing another horse that day.

Yup. I opted to cancel joint injections earlier this week because my vet had to go to an emergency appointment to see a horse that might be positive. Even after showering, changing, and disinfecting the truck I was still not comfortable.

So to add to the already scary situation, my vet told me today that there are lots of people who, when asked if they want to test a symptomatic horse, will refuse. :flushed:

I also found out that positive tests take 2-3 days to show up in any of the CDFA/EDCC reports.

This is much worse than it looks so far (and it looks pretty damn bad).

Best thing is to not inject horses or give any kind of dex. Abide by FEI rules.

The refusal to test horses for EHV was occurring mainly at Thermal, at least from what I heard directly from people there.

Avoid anything that can lower your horses’ immune systems.
