EHV1 outbreak information

What concerns me is that we have horses in other counties were they are awaiting test reports. That means it could have spread to four counties now in Colorado. One of those four counties, Boulder county, had a dressage show last weekend. Colorado Horse Park is still running it’s shows. For the quarantines to work, everyone has to participate.

Scary stuff. It’s amazing how fast it can spread.

Thank you all for sharing these updates, please keep us posted with more news as it is known.

During the last outbreak in Ca we vacinated the entire barn (70 horses) with a live virus. It was the only vacination that made my horse swell up with all four legs. It was scary.
My eldest also had a horrible reaction to that vaccine, including colic and muscle fasciculations. I definitely won’t re-vaccinate either of my older horses, but am having serious doubts about even using it on my youngest.

Update from CSU.
What a shame they had to cancel the Greg Best clinic. It is amazing how fast this situation deteriorated!

Too political for Langer to cancel the High Prairie show. It needs to be and for everyone to stay home and wait

Calvincrowe, I would stay home. It’s just not worth risking your horse. It’s not just horse to horse contact, people can spread it too. From the chatter going on on CL, all shows large and small, English and Western, have been cancelled in Yakima, Kittitas, Benton, and Franklin Counties.
There’s a h/j show in Monroe I doubt will cancel

There are about 5 threads on this. Do you think we could get the mods to merge them?

An Update about WSU VTH- I guess as of this morning the horse that was shedding the virus was moved to a different isolated location.

Thank you for the updates. Everyone stay safe.

I spoke with my vet yesterday and he said that we only have one confirmed case in Washington so far (the one at WSU) but he is urging people to not take their horses anywhere and not let any new horses on our property. It may seem extreme with only one confirmed case but this is how we can stop it from spreading!

NM wasn’t in the alerts listed above, but we got the following:

Folks leasing one of my horses have cancelled their plans to clinic this weekend, and I hope that the events themselves are canceled, as well.

Fox news in AZ is reporting 50 deaths here so far from the outbreak. I can’t speak to the validity of this. It seems very high. But that is whats being reported.

It’s starting to hit the mainstream news:

SF Bay Area news report:

Yes, it’s a bit annoying. I sent a PM to Moderator1 asking if they can be merged (I could only find four threads).

Oh, if FOX says it, it must be true…:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I think I’d look elsewhere for information. FOX is one step above (or below, depending how you look at the list) Wikipedia as a reliable source.

Stuff like this sure makes me long for the day when ALL my horses are at home and I can control the exposure. Right now I have two horses boarded at two different barns (along with my ones at home) – the one barn is closed to all ins and outs, while the other seems a little too blase about the whole thing as they don’t seem to want to set any policy at all. I’m not panicking, but being cautious at this point.

Latest bulletin from WA State Ag:

I will be discussing with Mr. Trainer and other competitors going to the teeny-tiny schooling show we are planning on attending this Sat/Sun–should we cancel or not?

There are no reported cases in Oregon (as per today’s update from OSU Vet).

Here in Weld County, CO I am hearing PSAs on the radio

This is a pretty good summary

Good summary of defensive action in simpleton terms.

Just found this on the Equine Chronicle site:

So are these the states that had horses’ competing at said event? Because Arizona isn’t on there and I really hope we don’t have any infected horses here…

Only one confirmed case in Alberta so far, so my vet isn’t too worried about me going to the upcomming dressage shows, but I do know the Arab/Saddlebred show in Red Deer has been cancelled…I think be cause they offer reining/cutting classes.

I am worried about the one kid who does 4H though…not sure I want her hauling in and out to 4H shows as western horses WILL be there and I don’t trust a kid to be smart about reducing risk.
