Yes, but there is an incubation period.
The cutting horses haven’t been home long enough for any that they may have possibly infected to show symptoms yet.
…Asked my vet friend, who had just gotten updates from the state; the cases references on Craigslist seem to be the two in March at Cornell, and the quarantine’s been lifted there. So apparently there are no recorded cases at the moment in NY.

According to Gary Magdesian, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, ACVECC, associate professor in the department of medicine and epidemiology at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), School of Veterinary Medicine, four horses at referral practices in Northern California tested positive for the virus May 16, and two horses currently in quarantine at UC Davis’ isolation facility tested positive the same day. Magdesian reported that veterinarians were treating the horses at UC Davis and that the animals were in stable condition as of Tuesday morning (May 17).

Current Herpes Update: As of last night, there were 10 confirmed cases in Northern California. The UC Davis lab is testing over 300 samples today, so the number may change dramatically by this evening. LBEMC veterinarian, Dr. Langdon Fielding, will be addressing the topic on the Channel 10 News tonight at 6:00. A number of barns in the area have initiated a self-imposed lockdown/quarantine for the next 14 days, which is a very prudent idea to help break the cycle of this virus.

SACRAMENTO, May 17, 2011 – Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), caused by Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1), has been confirmed in 10 horses in California, in Kern, Placer, Stanislaus, Amador and Napa counties. One horse in Kern County was euthanized after showing severe neurologic signs often associated with the disease. All of the infected horses recently attended the National Cutting Horse Association’s Western National Championships in Odgen, Utah on April 30 – May 8, 2011, where they were most likely exposed to the virus. All California horses that have been in contact with an infected horse and show signs of disease or test positive for EHM will be placed under a CDFA quarantine in order to limit spread. This disease outbreak is evolving and CDFA will continue to investigate cases and provide updated information.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture has contacted all 54 exhibitors from California who participated in the Odgen, Utah event and asked them to isolate and monitor their horses for clinical signs of EHV-1. A rectal temperature in excess of 102F commonly precedes other clinical signs. Therefore, horse owners with potentially exposed horses are urged to take temperatures on each individual horse twice a day. If a temperature above 102F is detected, the horse’s private veterinarian should be contacted immediately for evaluation and laboratory testing.

This was a post on Facebook from the owner of the horse who was euthanized in Bakersfield, she gave lots of information on the horse’s whereabouts and timeframes…Utah, Las Vegas, Scottsdale, Bakersfield etc…and the trail of horses that were infected at the locations she went to…poor people and horses.

Good point, Janet, I should have said totally effective. They did think that our other horses did not get sick because they were fully vaccinated. This horse was fully vaccinated as well, who knows why she got it and they didn’t. It is also possible that she lived because she had some antibodies built up from the vaccine, others think it can exacerbate the neurologic kind, no one really knows. It is recommended to vaccinate against EHV-1 every 6 months.
I recommend taking every precaution. It was a horrible experience, the mare had a very rough week or so in a sling with a spinal tap, it was touch and go for a while with her and it was extremely expensive, her vet bills were easily in the five figures. She was worth it and had six happy years teaching kids to ride afterwards, but still – something to avoid if at all possible.

"Currently there are no confirmed cases of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) in Texas. The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has no plans to change entry requirements for equine animals or to cancel any equine events at the present time. There has been no indication of spread outside of horses that attended the National Cutting Horse Association’s (NCHA) Western National Championships in Odgen, UT on April 30 - May 8, 2011.

I heard that there is a case here in Michigan. I will confirm with the vet tomorrow and post if it is true or not. Anyone else hear anything?
ETA: Called vet, there are NO confirmed cases in Michigan. I think maybe some horses are sick and people are just calling it that. There has been quite a bit of strangles going around that people are trying to pass as the flu.

If I remember correctly, this is what hit a farm pretty hard in Maryland a couple of years ago. Definite quarantine in the effect then.

Well, my barn is shut down today, for a week, on advice of vet. So I won’t be moving cattle Friday for a friend. A number of Utah events cancelled. Bummer but I am okay with the conservative approach.
I scratched Colorado Horse park h.t. If this EHV-1 outbreak scare is over in 2 weeks, I am going to see if they will take a late entry… I scratched because $750 dollars is a lot of money to lose in case the show has to cancel. I feel really bad about this, but the safety of my horses are paramount.
If we get the go ahead, we are going to be driving straight through, no lay-overs. (which is going to suck…16 hr drive…poor ponies)

This is incorrect 
Washington State University has closed their clinic due to the one positive horse.
Calvincrowe, I would stay home. It’s just not worth risking your horse. It’s not just horse to horse contact, people can spread it too. From the chatter going on on CL, all shows large and small, English and Western, have been cancelled in Yakima, Kittitas, Benton, and Franklin Counties.

As tough as it is, I do commend any barns/facilities who choose to shut down rather than take a chance with something like this.
