I live in eastern Ontario, and while this winter has been surprisingly mild, last year was our first year with an EV and we saw temps down to -40. We also have an hour long commute each way (straight hwy driving, no traffic)
We have a home charger, the car gets plugged in when we get home, and charges overnight. It pre conditions itself, so warms up for the drive without pulling on its own power. The heated seats and steering wheel pulls negligible power.
During the summer our range is 400km. In the coldest days last year we dropped down to 230. Still enough for our commute, but we could have done a boost if needed. We have charged it outside of the house only once (outside of taking a trip somewhere), and that was mainly to take advantage of a parking spot and because my husband wanted to try it. We live in a small town, directly between our workplace one hour west and the city we do most of our shopping and errands, one hour east.
We regularly drive it in -12 to -22 and I NEVER worry about range. If we got stranded on the side for awhile, the energy pull to warm the car is less then the gas expenditure. I.e. my electric car could keep us warmer longer then the truck.
In Canada, the infrastructure just isn’t there yet for trucks, but when it is, I will happily switch. We have had zero regrets going EV.
