I just read on The Horse.com that Elmer Bandit, 38 years young, was euthanized yesterday evening. He was unable to get back on his feet after being down in his pasture, and when the cold and bad weather conditions started to cause hypothermia, Mary Anna Wood, his lifelong owner made the decision to humanely euthanize Elmer.

This was an amazing horse!
What an amazing horse. He had a wonderful life. I have watched his progress over the years, he will be missed.

Guess it was going to happen eventually, but I really loved seeing his successes appear in the periodicals and I was hoping to see him continue. Phenomenal, inspirational horse.

I didnāt want to open the threadā¦but then again, every thread with his name for quite sometime (!) I would worry aboutā¦only to open and read of another joy, another time they spent together. I am so so thankful, that he chose his time to ābe readyā while at home, in a pastureā¦not on one of his rides. So the naysayers couldnāt point any fingers. He taught us all soooo many things. Age is just a numberā¦your time comes when it comesā¦do what you loveā¦find your passion!

I was a big fan of Elmer Bandit, and enjoyed following his career in the press. Remarkable horse, remarkable life. Sincere condolences to Mary Anna Wood.

My heart breaks for Elmer Bandit and his owner. I told my 31 year old arab that his role model should be Elmer Bandit, as he was living such a long and healthy life.
He was a truly amazing horse, and I canāt imagine how lost his owner feels.

I donāt usually frequent this forum but as an arab lover and long time admirer, Elmerās name brought me in. Iām so, so sad to hear the news. What a great inspiration he and his relationship with Mary Anna have been. Godspeed, Elmer. I hope there are thousands of new trails to explore where you are now.

Really incredible horse. Just sad he didnāt make it to 40, but he proved over and over again that age is just a number.

Anyone know what the magic recipe was that she fed him? I tried to read about it at the horse.com, but couldnāt.
I have a 25 y.o. crabbet endurance arabian that I want to keep going. he has some mouth issues, so this info could help him.

The thoughtful care of this horse is an inspiration to me and likely many others. I suspect he was a very, very happy and āfulfilledā equine, whatever that might mean to a horse.

Truly an amazing horse. Iāve ridden a few NATRC rides and have been at the same rides as Shirley Sobol and Wing Tempo but not Elmer and Anna. Both are proof that you donāt have to have a distinguished pedigree or perfect conformation to excel. Godspeed Elmer!
