very sad. I wonder what he was struggling with as there were several people who saw him just the week before. It’s hard when they get to that age and their teeth decline and eating habits change.
Many long time owners and handlers with retired competition horses don’t wait until something drastic occurs, they can’t rise without assistance or the last tooth falls out. They let them go when they start down that slope and their alertness activity and quality of life starts to deteriorate. It’s a well thought out choice even if you would do different with a personal horse with many of your memories attached to it.
