Embryo sales?

The question of the day is who here has had success in selling embryos and what have you found is the best way to market an unborn foal.

We [edit] are interested in selling some embryos. It’s great that we have successfully made the match but now it is time to market and sell something that we have never had to do and are not sure where to start. This morning I started advertizing on FB and their forums for sport horses but I think that that still reaches a very limited number of people. Although we will probably advertize on some of the horsey websites I think that it takes a special person to see the vision of buying an unborn foal. I do not think that for the most part those people are on horse.com or the like. I could be very wrong so please let me know.

Any suggestions are appreciated, we are not really too sure where to start. [edit]

You will have to clarify whether you are speaking of selling an actual embryo, or whether you are selling an in-utero foal. In-utero foal sales are becoming more and more common, but selling embryos still isn’t all that widespread in the warmblood industry. I have sold quite a few in-utero foals and generally have good success advertising on the traditional sites (equine.com, warmbloods-for-sale, etc).

You could do what a lot of people do - you could place a thinly veiled sales ad on a horse bulletin board that doesn’t allow advertising, and just wait for the PMs to start pouring in. Doesn’t cost you a dime!

Yes you could. Or you could ask a legitimate question from people that have had experience that you don’t have and use the forum for what it is intended. Sorry you have had other experiences. Im not worried about paying for advertising. Have a great day

Maybe I am being snobbish but it is a red flag to me that the OP isn’t using proper terminology. You are not looking to sell embryos by your own admission so why are you calling it that?

it sounds like it is a flushed embryo succesfully transferred to a recipient mare - so I can sorta see where the terminology is coming from. (And I am assuming the possibily of doing more flushes to get more embryos to transfer? )

Anyway for sure it would seem easier to sell an in utero foal than an Embryo as the former is a step closer to being a born foal. Sounds like usually marketing works for in-utero foals. I think selling custom embryos gets a lot tricker as the costs can start adding up quickly without any foal in the end.

OK. First of all my wife is the Vet, not me. That being the case I can actually sell an embryo frozen in a straw or an in-utero foal. So terminology what it is, I can actually do both. Yes, Omare selling the embryos is a lot trickier bc the success rate falls off dramatically once the embryos are frozen. I will try and explain myself more fully next time. I was just looking for some suggestions. In this case we are selling an in-utero foal transferred to a recipient mare, not a frozen embryo.

Thanks Hillside, I put out an ad on Equine.com and am doing one for Horsetopia and warmbloods-for-sale later today. I have put it out on Facebook as well and have had significant interest just off of that so we shall see how it goes.

If I was looking to purchase an embryo, it would not be a vitrified one. Success rates are SOOOO low with vitrified embryos. Selling embryos is quite common in the QH world, but the mare is bred to a stallion of the purchasers choosing (unless otherwise stated) and then the embryo flushed and implanted into a recipient.

Anyway. I have seen an ad of yours on FB, I think using the term embryo is going to be confusing for your audience. I would just define if it is in fact in utero or the embryo so there is no confusion. Best of luck!
