Emerson Burr grant test at Pony Finals- where it is ALL about real horsemanship

$500 grant for scoring high on a basic horsemanship written test then a hands on practical. Don’t need fancy Pony, expensive trainer standing at the door and the latest helmet. Just KNOWLEDGE and be entered at PF

Don’t miss out on an opportunity to show how much you know. Always amazing how many don’t bother…final sessions are Thursday.

Emerson Burr is awesome. We have the program at one of our August shows here in Oregon and it is such a great opportunity. Encourage the kids at your barn to participate if you’re at a show that has it! Grant money is less at the zone level ($100 to the winner) but every little bit helps, right?

What a great opportunity! And did anyone notice the USHJA Foundation grant offered to a first time pony finals rider who otherwise would not be able to take part? Very generous of the Gochman family to sponsor that opportunity.

Was so proud when DD won the youngest division years ago

It’s the trainers who have to ALLOW their riders to participate , most feel it’s not important , Why because they would have to produce knowledgeable riders and what trainer wants that ???

Good trainers want that.

My late trainer was big on it, she sent them all to take it and the zone horsemanship competition when offered, like it or not. Now…many don’t even know it’s going on or can’t be bothered. too bad, great opportunity and it’s a very level playing field most don’t take advantage of.

Go figure…

lcw579’s DD won the Emerson Burr Grant a few years ago at Pony Finals. Hopefully lcw will provide her thoughts on the program.

It is a great way for the riders at Pony Finals to show the scope of their talents as horsemen.

Yes “Good” trainers will always teach horsemanship , but they aren’t always considered to be the top trainers , are they now…

One of the very sweet girls whose parents own the farm where I board won the 8&under section of this…it really couldn’t have gone to a more deserving kid/family. They breed, train, show, and care for their own ponies and work incredibly hard. So very happy for a great kid.

My daughters always take it if they can. My youngest got to move on to the practical portion this week at Pony Finals.

Yes, she did and I was so proud! She entered spur of the moment to kill time while waiting for her PJ rounds. She said the written test took many of its questions right out of the Pony Club manuals so she was well prepared. We were still surprised when she got called back for the practical exam since she hadn’t prepared. I guess she aced that too since she won for her age group!

It is a shame that they don’t publicize it more. Honestly if someone else hadn’t mentioned that she should do it we wouldn’t have known about it. It’s a great program and a nice reward for kids who are hands on and knowledgeable about horse management.

ETA: Does anyone know who the award winners were this week?

Yes, I received an email from USEF.
8 and under: Kacy Baumgart
9-11: Mica Rose Frank
12-14:Madison Downs
15-17-Cayla Boerst

Congratulations!!!

I was proud of my twelve year old. She knew so many signs of colic that the tester had to stop her! And she has probably seen just a couple of horses with colic (thank goodness) but she is paying attention!! She also had to identify a splint, name various bits, and recognize types of hay and feed for the practical portion.

Madison Downs is a wonderful kid from around my area. I have watched that girl blossom. She didn’t have a spectacular Pony Finals but I am so happy for her to have won this award! Super nice kid with great horsemanship and sportsmanship.

It’s great that they divided it by age groups, and named it after Emerson Burr. He was the king of the pony ring for so many years!

what a wonderful sounding program. i would have been that kid who would have belonged here. I had no horse but that didn’t stop me devouring every knowledge book I could

After all these years on COTH, I think this is the first I have heard of this program. I don’t rotate in the hunter world but do look, every year ,at the PF threads. Dont remember it being mentioned before

Prehaps if members here know of a nice kids going to PF they can encourage looking at and aiming for this program

I wonder if the powers that be would be brave enough to open the contest to kids who dont have a pony at the finals

My older daughter did not show but took the test anyway. She was told her score at the end. She scored high enough to move on to practical portion but that was reserved for PF competitors.
