Enclosed motor fans for run-in sheds

My mucker is on vaca, and, after 1 day of mucking, I have decided that I need fans in the runout sheds.

Some people insist that only fans with enclosed motors should ever be used but I have always had box fans in the barn, and have never had a problem.

The fans will be at 8’ and tipped slightly down and the cord will be in conduit.

Do I have to have an enclosed fan? They seem to be 50% more than a good open motor fan

Money is tight, so I really have to think hard if I get new glasses (bad headaches) or enclosed fans. Hmmmmm.

Yeah, you really need enclosed motor fans for ag use. Non enclosed motor fans work fine until they burn your barn down. That may never happen or it may happen 6 months after you hang them. Is that risk worth the $$ savings?

Maybe this is something that gets done next spring instead of right now?

Here’s an old thread about this issue.

I agree, go closed motor.
Another reason in this situation is that it is not totally protected from the elements.

Are you sure you want fans? Our muckers all turn off the fan in the stall where they are mucking - they say it just blows dust and other undesirables into their faces (and lungs and eyes) if running while mucking. That said - I started a movement in our barn and now at least half of the horses have enclosed motor fans.
