They are currently camped on the 210 Freeway - a rather unusual ridecamp! Watch for 92 year old Julie Suhr and a host of other top endurance riders! They are Entry #49 right after the Stanford Marching Band.
I can’t watch the parade so please post links to more photos and videos.
KTLA is doing a GREAT job broadcasting the parade! Loved the Endurance folk - such bright smiling faces and horses BEHAVING. LOL!! I hope I look as good as Julie Sehr when I’m 91!
Thanks, prudence, for mentioning the parade. I’d forgotten until I saw your post! So I rearranged my morning to watch.
So glad you enjoyed the parade, GTD! We watched too - very cold outside and were reluctant to ride. Another day.

Hah! Cold indeed! It was in the high 30’s here, with a brisk wind. Perfect day for staying inside, making lobster salad, and watching the parade. I’m ready for the winter off here…now that we’re finally beginning to have winter! (Christmas Eve was 72 freak’n hot and sunny degrees outside - a record for DC!)
PS: KTLA did a stellar job commentating the parade. They really focused on each entry and talked only about it. When the endurance group came into view, the announcers were thrilled, and especially about Julie being in her 90’s. Was NOT thrilled to hear Al Roker (on that facebook link you gave - was that NBC that was taped?) talking about someone’s kid and blabbing on about that while ignoring the riders. What a jerk thing to do. Say, Al! NOBODY cares about some stranger’s new kid - we wanted you to talk about that HORSES and RIDERS. Just glad I wasn’t watching his station.)
I did find the segue from the Scripps Saddlebreds to glue rather humorous…There were lots of funny things like that in the coverage today. There was another one about whitesuiters that had my husband rolling.
I watched it on RFDTV. They cover all the equestrian entries.
I saw the endurance group. Pam Minnick wasn’t as detailed about them but you’re only as good as the notes you’re given, if you aren’t familiar with the entry:confused:
There were only three commercials during the entire parade:)
Beautiful endurance horses! Several Arabians?
If you have the Hallmark Channel I highly recommend their coverage. It is better than RFD and HGTV. I watched HGTV for years and then RFD until I discovered Hallmark last year. They broadcast the KTLA coverage without commercials and then rebroadcast with commercials. Although there was some funny segues this year, the coverage is good on every single entry from floats to marching bands. Yeh some of it is goofy information that no one really cares about but they try!
NBC with Roker mentioned the AERC working to keep Trails nice and usable, before going to the kid comments. Nice to have that connection told on National TV!
I thought the group looked terrific, horses were “perky” without being silly. Great Arab Breed representatives in that exciting setting. I think I saw one being ridden in a halter, was quite well behaved.
Congratulations on such wonderful Ambassadors for your Endurance Riding sport in the Parade. Hope you get lots of inquiries from folks watching the Parade and maybe some new riders learning about Endurance Riding.

I’d hazard a guess they were all Arabs. SUPER well behaved, and one “walking person” in the middle, just to lend a hand if necessary (which he did with Julie’s horse when the group had to come to a brief halt - although Julie’s horse was VERY well mannered I think the walker lent a hand to hold the bridle for a moment just because of Julie’s age). Very nicely done. All the riders looked GORGEOUS!
goodhors - I missed the one being ridden in a halter!! I was just super focused on the flowers adorning the riders, and their USA shirts/jackets. Stylish!!! And how stunning (and youthful) the women looked.
Here is the KXTV coverage of the group. Apparently Julie Suhr’s lovely Arabian gelding Rushcreek Aubie was put off by the Stanford Marching Band directly ahead of the group but all ended well:
Julie is how old? To be able to ride at 91 is so wonderful, but to ride a sensitive and fit Arabian in the Rose Bowl Parade at 91 is amazing!
Yes, that’s the clip that KTLA showed. VERY nice commentary. Julie’s horse did remarkably well - I’ve been in those type of parades before (with my carriage) and you need a very solid horse/pony to deal with all the noise and commotion and crowds and especially the marching bands. My favorite “parade pony” was also a foxhunter and so he was nonplussed by noise and commotion. He was my “go to” for any big event. No ace needed. Not a drop. Bless his dearly departed heart.
And don’t the riders look stunning!! The helmets all decorated up, the makeup, the bright smiles, beautiful faces, posed and very much in tune with their horses who are all on their best behavior and look gorgeous. Says a lot. I was very proud of them. Very proud.
I added a year in my original post - she is 91. Good genes for sure - her daughter Barbara is the one with 35 Tevis Cup finishes.
They looked fantastic! So glad to see such great ambassadors for horse riding.
In the clip that shows Julie getting help from a ground member: damn she looks good for her age. Her horse didn’t want to walk over the manhole in the street but sure handled all the crowds well.
It is so wonderful to see riders wearing helmets in a parade, and they had them nicely decorated.
