EPM-what's the latest in testing/treatment/prognosis?

My vets just learned that another pharmacy carries the powdered sulfa combo. They had a bucket of it ordered in for me and that stuff is just wonderful! So much easier to deal with than the liquid. I just mix the appropriate amount into a scoop of sweet feed and down it goes, no fuss, no muss! I don’t worry about him getting it all in like I did with the liquid that he would. not. swallow!

My powder came from Wedgewood and I believe my vets got it apple flavored:D

So, this thread is 10 years old…My horse has just been tested positive for EPM, with a result of 1:8000. Per the lab report that is not “high” but my vet called it “fairly significant”. This horse has only been in the US under 2 years, so the exposure has been within that time frame.

My vet suggested Protazil and vitamin E. Does anyone have any other thoughts? Clearly some folks here have lots more info than I do…Am feeling overwhelmed.

A lady at my barn treated her horse with Orogin. It’s a 10 day treatment and is MUCH less expensive (~$300) and shorter protocol than Marquis (~$900). Her horse recovered well. She also did 10,000 IU/day of Vitamin E. I think she also repeated the Orogin treatment after a period of time per her vet’s recommendation.

I have a yearling that was diagnosed with EPM via blood sample by UC-Davis in July. We did one round of Protazil then a round of compounded Ponazuril. I’ve also been giving him 10,000 IU of vitamin E (Elevate WS) every day. The incoordination he was exhibiting in his hind end is now gone.

Do you continue the vitamin E after the EPM treatment?

Yes, I’m going to continue with the vitamin E. I actually just ordered some Elevate Concentrate from KPP yesterday to start when the WS runs out. One dose of that is 5,000 IU. If he continues to do well on that I may try scaling back on the daily IU, but we’ll see how it goes.

OK, I just looked that up. It says one scoop delivers 1000 IU, so 10 scoops? One bucket would last 13 days.
I got the liquid from Allivet, also Elevate. Just didn’t know if folks felt it was worthwhile to continue the vitamin E.
Thanks for your thoughts.

The water soluble vitamin E as well as the concentrated 5,000IU powder is available at KPPVET.

We use Marquis and Vitamin E (10,000 iu per day of natural kind).

Watch for coupons at AlliVet and 1800petmeds etc for the concentrate. I can usually find it 10-15% off and free shipping.

My mare was diagnosed via IFAT in May. Did 2 months of Protazil which was easy as pie to give. I actually hand-fed her the pellets so if she dropped one, I could pick it up and give it back to her!

Also gave Vitamin E oil and an immune modulator (Eq-Stim).

I did not continue the Vitamin E after treatment because mine are on good grass (when diagnosed, she had been in training, so not much grass).

I actually tried to give her the ReBalance liquid (the sulfa combo), but she Would. Not. Swallow. It. No matter how small an amount I would give at a time, she would just hold it in her mouth and drool it out. Got tired of medicating the floor.

She vacuumed up the Protazil, it was her treat.

We have been back riding again for just over a month.
