Seeking information as the title suggest. I’ve heard a few riders mention this. But, from just a google search and never even seeking therapy for personal mental health am completely unfamiliar with this area. Suggestions for anyone in particular? Are they all created equal? Experience?
Check our the most recent Major League Eventing podcast. They interviewed a great equestrian sports psychologist.
I won the USEA Worth the Trust Sports Psychology grant last year. I researched sports psychologist in my area and first I found some at the university. But they did not have an equestrian focus. I came across an article in the Chronicle on Remarqueable Athletic Solutions and Erin McGuire. I took her boot camp and it was immensely helpful!
Hello AskMyAccoutant.17 - you have asked a very good question. A lot depends upon where you live and where the sports psychologists are located. In the USA, they can only legally practice in the state they are registered in - some can practice in other states when they have met that state’s requirement. It is relatively the same in Canada, however, there are only 5 provinces at this time who regulate their therapists (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and Ontario of the Maritime provinces - not sure which one NS?) Having said all of this Shannon Thompson is an excellent choice https://hypo2sport.com/team/sthompson/. She was a 3 day eventer. I’m sure if she is unable to support you, she will be able to make some recommendations. Hopefully this helps. I applaud you for looking into a sports psychologist, for whatever reason.
Depends on exactly what you are looking for? For equestrian performance coaching to help you with your mental game, fear, etc. I highly recommend Jen Verharen of Cadence Coaching. Her Performance Project is excellent and I know several friends who have had great success with all kinds of issues through her one on one coaching.
Two years ago, Tonya Johnston helped with with my jumping anxiety. I was having full blown panic attacks. We did 8 phone sessions. She is also the author of the book Inside Your Ride. She has a podcast and FB page as well. She really helped me and I thoroughly enjoyed her book. She is a rider and I think that helps her to relate.
