Equestrian themed baby names?

Minnie, lol.

Boys: Monty, Colton, Kodi (seems to be a popular name for the standard issue ginger trail horses we see around here), Goerge (as in Prix St George), Buck?, Lex (Lexington), Ed (Mr. Ed), Sampson (name of the tallest ever horse, I think. also the horse in sleeping beauty), Ace :), Leon (Butts Leon 2012? Olymipcs), Kelso, Harlan (TB)

Girl: Hannah (little bit like Hannovarian), Cadence, Rachael Alexandra (Preakness winner), Pippa (Pippa Funnell of eventing fame)

Marshall means “keeper of the horses”

Is there something we need to know?[/QUOTE] I think once you find a really good farrier, you should be prepared to do pretty much anything to keep him happy… I know a few Coltons. And for the dressage aficionados, how about Uberstreichen, Durchlassigkeit or Schwung?

Check out these pages w/lots of suggestions and the meanings…:

Phillipi is an excellent name choice

If you’re into deessage, what about Travers (“Trav”) or Renvers (“Rev”)?

I know a dressage rider whose son is named Blaze Canyon.

Cannon

Croup

Roman

Wither

Sadler

How about Ross? It used to be in the baby name books as meaning Horseman, but if you Google it now you get more Scottish “headland” roots for the meaning. But ion one page they say: from an Anglo-Saxon perspective, the surname could have been derived from an occupational name from the Germanic “hros” meaning “horse” to describe a horse breeder or a keeper of horses.

I know these things because my mother’s best friend named her son Ross to mean “horseman”

Darby (Can also be spelled Derby but she’ll have to correct people her entire life)

Late to the party
A friend of mine is the grandmother of the infamous Colton and she wanted that name so he could be called ‘Colt’ for short.

When our son was born 47 years ago (27 years before we ever owned a horse), we decided to give him the middle name of Morgan. We loved the Morgan horse, the Morgan sports car, the movie Morgan (that’s really dating us!), a friend’s pup called Morgan, and, according to a baby-naming book, the meaning of Morgan - great, bright, or from the sea. It was a no brainer.

Fast forward to 2009, the year my last 2 foals were born. I registered both boys’ names to reflect their dams’ registered names (these are pure Shires). The boys were foaled 5 weeks apart. The first one required a J name after his dam, Jane. I decided to name him after our son, Joshua. The second foal needed a V name, after his dam, Victorious. He became Victory, stable name Toffee, after his sire Taffy.

The problem that arose with calling the first colt Joshua, was everyone thought I was referring to our son when I mentioned worming, bathing, grooming, or vaccinating him. So, because the colt loved tapping his upturned feed bowl after a meal, his stable name became Drummer.

The boys will be 6 years old in a matter of days/weeks and they are in their forever home here with us.

While this may not have helped the OP make a decision on a name for her baby, it does illustrate that naming can go both ways.

Grew up showing with a “Filly”. Later she went on to star in underwear videos on Youtube. Avoid Filly.

I think Fetlock is a very powerful name. Brings to mind muscular Nordic men with flowing blonde hair carrying tools.

It’s rather popular to call boys by initials. Instead of the typical TJ, what about TMJ?

For a girl, you could go with Tempi, but she might turn out rather moody and mercurial.

For a potentially tall and broad boy: Clydesdale shortened to “Clyde”

How about Bonnie, short for ear bonnet?

Beezie- if you are into hunter/jumper. Can be a nickname for Elizabeth or Beatrice, or really any B name.

I like:

Marshall
Phillip(a)
Cadence
Eowyn

I am also really enjoying “Cadence” and “Eowyn”

Some others:

Trip§ (Triple bar… kinda also sounds like a western name)
Connie (Connemara Pony)
Misty (of chincoteague)
Blaze/Blaise

I have known girls named Bay, Pace, and Tally. The first 2 were riders as well. Tally was short for something that I can’t remember. (Sadly she and her sister were murdered by their mother when we were in elementary school!)
