Equi-Spaz

Has anyone heard of or used this product? It is alleged to relieve gas pains in horses.

It is OTC, so no scrip required and can be purchased directly from Saratoga Products or, amazingly enough, from Amazon.

If you have used it, did it work for you? What’s the dosage? Entire tube? Some portion thereof?

It’s touted as “This is a great great digestion supplement for horses that will help prevent gas build-up and soothe your horses digestive system. It is the best natural treatment for colic in horses.”

Ingredients from the Saratoga web site:
Pancreatic Enzyme E, Protease 25 USP Units/mg

Question for the vets/chemists among us… Which of these ingredients would be key to reducing gas?

Pretty sure I used this a few years ago, maybe I’m wrong. But the product’s main ingredient was Dimethicone. Which is a surfactant, it pops bubbles. Guess you can tell I’m not a chemist.
OTC at your drugstore is Gas-Ex, simethicone, another surfactant. The extra strength tablet dosing is one per 100 lbs body weight. Half that 30 minutes later. But I’ve done more than that half dose before. It seemed to really help. Vet was on board with its usage.

Yes! And it works for gas colics. It is like Di-gel for horses. You give an entire tube. If not better in 30 minutes, it is likely not gas. But you can give another tube if you think it might be better. It will not interfere with anything a vet will do if you need to call one out.

I had a colickly mare and it helped both of us. She felt better and I stopped worrying about whether I should call the vet. I always keep some onhand.

Yes, it’s good to have around for those mild colicky episodes!
