My vet has recommended the Equiband system as I progressively rehab my mare from an injury. I have measured her according to manufacturer instructions and lunged her a few times with the bands before I decide to ride with them on. However, I do noticed the belly band slips backwards and the last thing I want to do is create a bucking strap (haha)! The bands are snug! They aren’t slipping because they are too loose. Any thoughts or recommendations from your experiences?
I make a loop of bailing twine and attach it to the d-ring on the girth if it has one, otherwise I put the entire girth through it. Then just put the band through it. Doesn’t look very classy but it’s free and effective
Similar to above - I put the belly band through a small leather strap and clip that to the D ring on the girth. Insurance
I use mine with a sircingle. I had to make sure it was snug enough so the whole unit (sircingle, pad, bands) don’t slip back. Good idea to loop the belly band to the girth…
I love a simple solution! Thank you!
What kind of leather strap did you use? Anything specific that you repurposed? (trying to get an idea of what would work length wise like spur straps vs a kids stirrup leather etc). Thank you!
Old spur strap! I managed to put a clip on it to make the on/off process a little easier than just trying to slide it through the D Ring. Think I stole a clip from an old blanket leg strap. Very MacGyver but it works!
The belly strap needs to be tighter. It’s common for it to seem really tight when they are just relaxing and you are putting it on. But once the horse engages the core, the belly should tuck up a bit (some more than others, depending on conformation), and all of a sudden, it’s actually too loose! Also, be sure you are using the correct size pad (the larger pad for example does have the belly strap buckles farther back than the regular/medium sized pad). The saddle pad may also tend to migrate backwards a bit as you go, due to tension on the rear strap, so having the belly strap in vertical placement may be a little bit farther back and on a narrower part of the belly, thus making it again too loose and prone to slipping back. Final reason is the band is getting too sweaty.
