Equiderma lotion reaction

Just a PSA: I tried some equiderma lotion on my horse who had some minor hives/sweet itch. He was very itchy and even though I’m doing other things to try and help, I thought the equiderma lotion would help sooth it. On their website it says it helps soothe hives.

Well he had a pretty good reaction to it. The next day I went out and he had massive lumps instead of small hives. It was pretty dramatic. I could tell it was the equiderma, there was a residue from it. Everywhere there was clearly lotion, a giant hive.

I know many people love it and use it for everything. I didn’t expect a reaction at all so just wanted to put it out there- use caution!

My boy is clearly sensitive and I should have tested a small spot first.

You are really going through a time of testing for sure. Your poor boy.

Based on the ingredients I have seen in that line I did not go for the products.

@candyappy I know. He’s really having a tough few weeks.

On the bright side, his spider bite looks wonderful. Just a small scab at this point, can barely tell anything happened. Thank goodness.

I’m almost wondering if that spider bite has his immune system overreacting or something? Or maybe he’ll always be so sensitive. But I sure wonder about something like that, given how close together time wise this all is.

@Fellbutbackup you know I thought it was a marketing ploy when I’d see the ads. But so many people recommended it to me, specifically for hives. So I thought what the heck, I’ll try it. Can’t hurt!

Well, I was wrong. Luckily his hives have gone down a lot after sponging that stuff off!

You can try to look at Zephyr’s Garden, or Farrier’s Wife. Also consider Bach Rescue Cream instead. And many others that aren’t coming up for me right now. I don’t like Equiderma at all. Full of chemicals and yet claims to be natural. Or heck, even the organic diaper cream at Kroger’s

What ingredients turned you off?

The first time (several years ago) i used equiderma i was amazed at how well it worked. Lately, i dont feel like it works at all

Any horse(animal) can have a reaction to ANY THING at any time.

I have had horses react to just about every skin lotion that has been made (I own a barn full of friesians and sensitive Arabs.) so I have tried many of the various skin potions.

So I use with caution the first time, and they can occasionally react after being fine many times.

I had the same thing happen with one of mine after using the shampoo.

@rememberthenight absolutely! Just like people.

I just didn’t expect it. This was more of a reminder to just be aware that it can happen and try to test the product before hand. I do that with many things, but for some reason totally trusted the product would help and slathered it on him. Poor buddy. At least washing it off helped.

Ingredients:
Mineral oil, Aqueous solution, Surfactant, Chlorhexadine, N-Trichloromethylthio, 4-Cyclohexene-1, 2-Dicaboximide

Horses are individuals so some can certainly react to products others don’t, but were you using any Other products on the skin? Recently shampooed with an anti-fungal; fly spray; other anti-itch remedies? I find most reactions come from interaction between different products. It’s always a good idea to wash old stuff off, wait a day or two, and Then try something new.

i mix up my own version using hypoallergenic lotion base, chlorhexidine gluconate 2%, and a touch of mineral oil. Works as good as the brand name, and costs squat in comparison.

@Melissa.Van Doren I had used some coat defense powder two days before. So maybe they interacted.

Either way I took it back. I just didn’t feel it was worth testing out again. But I know many people love it and it works for many!

It has worked great for me, but I haven’t used it on anything but cannon bone scurf and a bare spot that I think was a fungal thing. I never used it on hives. I was under the impression it was for fungal or bacterial issues, not hives.

Once when I used the Equiderma fly spray I had one of my horses break out in hives. I avoided using it on him after that but eventually tried it again and he had absolutely no reaction - and still hasn’t to this day. Just a reminder that many things can cause hives and sometimes it’s not readily apparent which thing it actually is.

I certainly understand being cautious going forward, but I do have to say that I really love Equiderma products and have found them to be indispensable in my barn. The fly spray is great, as is the skin lotion, the wound care, and most especially the medicated zinc oxide paste. Also, their customer service is outstanding.

Maybe I’ll try something else but not right now. Not keen on using anything on him right now. I’ve hosed him off but that’s all I’m doing for now. Things are getting a bit better.

This wasn’t meant to bash equiderma. Just an FYI about what could possibly happen. It was something I hadn’t thought about.

Both of my thoroughbreds broke out in hives from Equiderma, I absolutely do a spot test now.
