Equine asthma- Fluticasone & albuterol

Hi! My 5 year old was just diagnosed with asthma- he had lung lavage & scope. As well as allergy testing. He’s allergic to quite a bit (more on that later!). But he has just started an inhaler using Fluticasone & albuterol 2 times a day for his cough. Have any of you used that?? Was it successful?? How long did it take to see results?? Any help/information /precautions ect ect are greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

I have a welsh pony that uses beclomethasone and albuterol inhalers. They do work for his respiratory issues. He does not need them daily, just mostly in the hottest part of the summer when the humidity and air quality is poor.

I am curious if you guys that have your horses using inhalers are able to ride them? I have been toying with the idea as my heave horse is coughing in the field…without any exertion and have basically given up the idea of riding him.

That depends on the individual horse and it’s condition. Some are pretty mild and respond quickly to inhalers and meds. Some struggle, obvious which group can be ridden and when.

Mine responded very well and quickly to meds (clenbuterol). Seasonal allergy related cough. But there are side effects, it got kind of mild shakes after several consecutive days of meds. I didn’t ride it when it was experiencing any symptoms ( cough) and tried to keep the meds to a couple of days max. That generally cleared it up. Show horse too, had to come off the stuff a week out to be sure it cleared.

If my pony was big enough to ride, I feel that the inhalers control him enough so that he could be worked (as tolerated).

I haven’t used those …but I have a haygain hay steamer that has helped tremendously with my horses cough …I also supplement with Aleira …he hasn’t needed any medication since …he was getting ventipulmin , hydroxyzine , Trihist …you name it …nothing helped until I started steaming his hay and giving Aleira …also switching to Gold fields dust extracted chopped straw bedding makeeva difference too

We had a pony with heaves. Tried the ventipulmin and herbal supplements with no help. Gave him Zyrtec, but never the inhalers. I just couldn’t fathom how large a dose would be needed for an animal this size. I second the hay steaming. Also, the more element protected turn out, the better. We couldn’t get him under control and I worried so much about him when he coughed that the worry and sympathy as an asthmatic myself, outweighed the joy. I will say that my trainer told us to let him live outside. That seemed cruel as I like my horses to have a stall (a topic I know is debatable on this sight-flame suit on). He was right. We sold him for a bargain, they had him live outside with a run in and he thrived. Wins everything and placed at pony finals the first year they had him.
