Equine insurance company recommendations

There’s probably a thread about this already, but I searched and couldn’t find it (for those of you more forum-savvy, feel free to send links)…

Anyone have recommendations for their favorite equine insurance provider? I basically just know the big names and have done some research, but hoped some of you might have some good tips.

The horse is a 12yo holsteiner gelding that will be going training/prelim and my plan is to do mortality, major medical, and maybe loss of use, if it’s not too expensive. Any recommendations on which plans/deductibles/etc. to pick are welcome as well. TIA

I have Hallmark which I’ve been very happy with - had a 2 colic claims back to back which they paid without batting an eye (of course horse is now excluded from colic but…). I’ve had them now for 7 years, and they will insure seniors (mine is 20 and have mortality on him - don’t want to jinx things by dropping it).

the policy I initially had included a $2500 colic rider on top major medical, which some other companies have. I think Markel also had a colic rider but Hallmark’s was a little higher and premium slightly less.

I know other folks who’ve been very happy with Markel and Broadstone too. The piece of advice I tell everyone is that you still have to have some ability to pay as the insurance reimburses YOU, not the vet clinic. So you need to make sure you have a credit card with a healthy line of credit or some other source of funds, which you can pay back once insurance pays out. Having insurance, though, makes tough decisions much easier vs not having it. Having insurance when my horse had his first surgery was truly the difference between euth right then or surgery. 8 years later, I have a happy and healthy boy.

I’m an agent at Broadstone so obligated to recommend our agency  (But honestly, I"d recommend it even if I werent!) We have access to several different companies so can really help you find the right plan for you.

We have American Reliable which I think is thru Broadstone. My horse had to be euthanized this summer and they were great to deal with. Very traumatic time obviously but they were great to deal with and I will definitely do business with them again.

I have been very pleased with my coverage and service with XL Specialty, placed through Broadstone. Broadstone has been great to work with and has a number of options. I have had to make medical claims, and XL has paid out in full without nickel and diming me. I also like that XL has an additional coverage option that lets you buy a waiver of the diagnostic co-pay, which if you have an injury is coverage that will pay for itself many many times over!
