Hi everyone, I want to buy mortality and major medical insurance for my horse. Does anyone have any recommendations for insurance companies, please? Thanks!
In the past we have used Broadstone. We made several claims and they were excellent to work with,
I donāt have a recommendation. What I will
share is that if you have āloss of useāĀ it is my understanding the insurance company will take the horse if the pay that claim. If you are purchasing that, something to keep in mind.
Thanks for sharing your research, @Horselove5
Iām curious - is the ātotalā column the annual premium?
Thanks from another spreadsheet lover.
I contacted Broadstone for a quote, but they wonāt insure my gelding because he is too old. I am not so much concerned with mortality valuation, more in getting some coverage for major medical issues. Blue Bridle and ASPCA are the only ones so far that look like possibilities for him.
If you donāt mind me asking, how old is he? I own an independent equine insurance agency, and I write for quite a few great carriers. Please DM me if I can help answer any questions
I use Jarvis insurance. I make 3 payments a year for mortality, $10,000 major medical, and colic surgery. I just filed my first claim and itās been 2 weeks since I submitted the paperwork, havenāt been able to get through to his adjuster despite leaving 2 messages. They also keep saying my insurance lapsed but I renewed it on time. They also once sent me an email that wS supposed to go to someone else that was increasing their horses value. $500 deductible with 20% copay. Iām still waiting for this to be a positive or negative experience.
I have XL Catlin. Bought it in 2017 when I bought my horse.
Pluses: they have been great in paying expenses and havenāt questioned anything at all.
Cons: they have been a BEAR in negotiating exclusions at each renewal. They try to exclude very broad categories of things and my broker has been awful to work with ā I have to basically tell her what to do. This last year I will admit was a doozy because my horse had acute laminitis and I hit the max payout of $10k. At renewal, they told me that they were only renewing me because last year they gave me a guaranteed renewal. And they flat out refused to discuss the exclusions, some of which were incredibly broad and in my view not fair based on the medical records. Again, my broker was useless so that might be part of it.
Iām not necessarily saying this makes them bad (to be fair, they have paid me more than I have paid them), especially relative to others, but just FYI.
Iāve had Markel for years and Iām really happy with them. Theyāre great to work with and Iāve always received reimbursement quickly when Iāve made claims. I have a $375 deductible and a 20% copay for major medical.
I ended up going with Blue Bridle. Weāll see how it goes. The ASPCA insurance was a close second, but Blue Bridle offered extra surgery and colic coverage.
I really like Great American. I had young horse insured for mortality. Died as a yearling and super easy to work with
I use Broadstone and had XL thru them. XL was excellent in paying claims, then they changed some of their criteria and would not cover my horse. Broadstone got us insured thru Great American. Luckily. No claims so I canāt comment on how they are to work wothāā¹āā¹āā¹āā¹āā¹āā¹.
Jennifer Oliver with Central Virginia Insuranceā¦she is awesome!! Independent agent and can write for the carrier that best suites you!
Usually you canāt get Major Medical without Mortality - and remember if a medical emergency comes up you still need to have the outlay of cash (or nice credit card line) until you get reimbursed from the insurance carrier. Nice to know Blue Bridle covered your horse.
Hi! Could you please update us on your experience with Jarvis?
Old thread but I had Jarvis but I dropped them. They hiked up my premium quite a bit because I did report a minor veterinary issue but then threatened to hike it if I didnāt notify them everytime I called the vet.
I went with another company and itās been pretty smooth. Just renewed my policy again for mortality/surgical.
Thank you! Would you mind sharing what company you are using now?
McNamara. They have a couple different companies they work with. I had a good experience with a claim them/underwriter by Great American.
