equine internships or working student positions

I am currently looking for a position as either an intern or a working student for the summer of 2015. I am in my second year of college as a pre-veterinarian student and I wish to find a place where I can work closely with horse people. An opportunity to work with an equine vet or a trainer would be amazing. I am also interested in rehabilitation work. Also if there is a chance of riding, that would be a great benefit. Location is not an issue as long as there is housing provided. Places in Massachusetts would not need to include housing. Does anyone know of any positions available or any people/ barns to look into?

Check out Yard and Groom. Make a profile. Also if you’re looking into Rehab, there is KESMARC in Kentucky.

Kentucky Equine Management Internship. I think the website is www.kemi.org
Great program, well run, you get a lot of exposure to all aspects of the Thoroughbred industry from foaling, breaking and training, sales, and racing. 6 month internship, they offer a spring or fall session depending on your interests.

Hagyard has some opportunities for undergrads: http://www.hagyard.com/Undergraduate-Opportunities.html

Peterson & Smith has a working student program for undergrads: http://www.petersonsmith.com/educational-and-professional-opportunities/working-student-program

I believe Spy Coast Farm has an internship-type program as well, but I don’t see any information about it on their website: http://www.spycoastfarm.com/

Check with some vet school hospitals. Many need assistants to work during summer and winter vacations when they are busy and have to give the regular staff time off for vacations. My daughter worked at the local vet school hospital when she was in school. She learned a lot of vet nursing skills that were very helpful as a veterinarian. It also is nice to get to know the academic vets who are on faculty. If you work with them for long enough, they will often help with your letters of recommendation for vet school. Where are you in college?
