Has anyone tried it on their Event horse?
A friend of mine just got certified and we were talking about it.
Wondering if you got any results from it? How long?
Thinking of giving it a whirl. And maybe even on myself afterwards
My mare is recovering from.cellulitis and she is wearing kinesio tape right now! My friend who does kinesio taping with humans and is a rider did it; it was a bit of an experiment, but we saw good results! We used equitape but it wasn’t sticky enough. Putting hairspray on ahead made the tape stick better. I’m ordering Rock Tape now as she said it’s stickier. We’re also forming a small study group locally with a couple massage therapists, a chiro and my taper friend so they can learn from each other and geek out on fascia talk. LOL. I’m excited to add this to my horses’ care team’s skill set.
I’ve personally been taped and found it to be really helpful.
I use the tape on myself regularly (competitive distance runner), and am happy with the results. I’ve never tried it on a horse, though, and don’t quite get how it would work. On humans, the tape adheres directly to the skin; on horses, there’s that pesky fur barrier.
Is there any actual data on the use of this product?
I was thinking if I was going to use it on a horse, I’d clipper right down to the skin so the tape can hold and do what it is supposed to do… both a bit of support as well as feedback to the body (as I understand it).
I’ve used it on a “bad” knee and liked it.
I figure if the road bicycle racers use it, must be something to it
I definitely want to try it on myself. But that’s what I was wondering, is how does it become effective thru all that fur lol…now that they’ve finally shedded out maybe it’ll be better. Thinking of putting it over the SI and down the back- she says you cans till ride them with it on and lasts for 4 days. Still kinda skeptical though.
My old horse had some put on by his chiro over the SI area but unfortunately it was winter and with the blanket rubbing it came off by the next morning. We never saw any results since it kept coming off. There definitely seems to be some brands that are stickier than others.
I actually have some on me right now because I can get terrible tension headaches. We were ripping up the floor in my house a few days ago and before I went to sleep we put it on because I could feel it starting to seize up. I have felt great! Its been about 5 days and it is still on.
This is in people, mind you… there is practically NO evidence in horses… if any at all.

Effect of kinesiology taping on pain in individuals with musculoskeletal injuries: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abstract
Kinesiology tape, an elastic tape used by sports medicine clinicians to enhance sports performance in athletes, is purported to facilitate a reduction in pain during physical activity in individuals with orthopedic injuries, but high-quality literature on this topic remains scarce. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to critically examine and review the existing literature to evaluate the effect of kinesiology tape application on pain in individuals with musculoskeletal injury. English-language publications from 2003 to 2013 were surveyed by searching SPORTDiscus, Scopus, ScienceDirect, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and PEDro databases using the terms kinesio tap*, kinesiology tap*, kinesiotap*, and pain. Thirteen articles investigating the effects of kinesiology tape application on pain with at least level II evidence were selected. The combined results of this meta-analysis indicate that kinesiology tape may have limited potential to reduce pain in individuals with musculoskeletal injury; however, depending on the conditions, the reduction in pain may not be clinically meaningful. Kinesiology tape application did not reduce specific pain measures related to musculoskeletal injury above and beyond other modalities compared in the context of included articles. We suggest that kinesiology tape may be used in conjunction with or in place of more traditional therapies, and further research that employs controlled measures compared with kinesiology tape is needed to evaluate efficacy.
I use it on myself and will say it works phenomenonly well for the issue I had
On my horses wouldn waste the $$$ for tape…because it has to lif the area under tape,up…and hair/coat would hinder that…and clipping down to the skin just isn t worth the hassle…
I have used it on myself, and found it worked amazingly well. I haven’t tried it on the horses yet though.
I have never tried it but I know some of the BNTs have used it on their horses. I remember seeing a pic of an FEI barn a few years ago (it was probably Rolex) where a bunch of the horses had it on. So use on horses is certainly not unheard of. I am skeptical of it on people and horses but I know people who swear by it.
I was skeptical about KT Tape but last summer I ended up with anterior tibial tendonitis. It started when I was on trip chaperoning my daughter’s crew team and in desperation I bought some at the CVS. It made a huge difference to my comfort level. I still use it when I’m riding for long periods because the pronation of my foot in the stirrup bothers me. I also use it on my knee when I bike and it’s much more comfortable than the neoprene brace I used to wear.
Haven’t thought about using it on a horse but for me it’s made a difference.
ok so how is it different than regular athletic tape?
I know for people, there are some tapes out there that have medicine in the adhesive so when put it on it releases into the painful area. But when reading up on the kinesiology tape, it doesn’t say anything about medicine in it. It’s still strange to me but reading testimonials, people are swearing by it and for their horses. Hmmmm. Wonder if it’s just a fad or maybe I should give it a try just to see.
KT tape has been a life-changer for me. My parts are held on by chewing gum and duct tape these days, but the KT really helps.
We just had our horses done for the first time by a new chiro to us (my regular one is out with shoulder surgery). I would say all the horses felt great, but they also had a chiro adjustment and body work, so who know what was what. She used an equine specific tape she got from Sweden that she felt stuck better than any of the others she’d tried.
I had a painful shoulder, and a vet friend pulled out KT and applied it on me. Worked like a charm, although my physical therapist insisted it was just placebo effect. However, two months of PT left my shoulder painful while two weeks of KT resulted in no pain. Guess what I’m going with next time?
IMO, some PTs will believe it makes a difference, some will believe placebo only.
As I’ve said before, I see quite a number of world level bicycle road racers who wear it. I don’t think they’d use a modality they didn’t think would work.
I’ve used it for a shoulder and a knee and I think it makes a difference. At this point, who cares if it really makes a difference or I only believe it makes a difference?
Horses, on the other hand, are subject to placebo suggestions. If they act better/different, it must do something.

KT tape has been a life-changer for me. [/QUOTE]
Me too. I was extremely skeptical when I tried it. I had something going on with my forearm and was desperate. I didn’t expect to feel any difference but boy I sure did. I found I had to wear the tape for almost a week but after that, I stopped wearing the tape and found I was pain free and continue to be.
I had been coping with the pain for quite awhile (I’d say at least 4 months) before trying the tape.
