Equine liability insurance when you send a horse to training?

Hello peeps,
Just like the title indicates, I’m sending a horse out for three months of training. It’s a small operation, with about six other horses in training. She’ll be ridden mostly on ranchland and around cattle, but the trainers plan to haul her to some arenas/parades/events for some seasoning and to see the sights.

Should I get liability insurance on her for that duration? And if so, do y’all have recommendations for insurers?

Many thanks!

if you have homeowners insurance check to see if you have liability coverage and does that coverage extend to animals own by the policy holder

I have asked our carrier and they referred us to this clause of the homeowner’s policy

d. Is caused by an animal owned by or in
the care of any insured .

Call around to various farm policy agents. It depends on your state. In mine, home owners policies specifically exclude property damage caused by animals owned by the Insured. And the horse not being on your property could be a problem for some policies. Additionally some home owners policy companies won’t touch farm anything with a 10’ pole. That’s ultimately why I left USAA, for example.

Trainers & boarding facilities should have their own liability policies, including care, custody, & control. Should is the key word here. If they don’t and there is a problem… Best to call around & ask a few agents.

Thanks, y’all!

Agreed. I would be unwilling to send a horse to training that didn’t have its own substantial liability policy. Your ability to control the situation is 0% - so you don’t want to have the only insurance policy. Supplemental insurance isn’t a bad thing, but the training facility is really the one that needs liability insurance in this instance.

I agree with what others have said. Confirm that the trainer carries “care, custody and control” coverage. And don’t assume your homeowner’s policy will cover you. I have a farm policy for my 15-acre equestrian facility but have to carry a separate liability policy – the farm policy doesn’t cover damage caused by horses.

My barn requires equine liability insurance on all horses on the property. It cost me less than $200 per year for a $2 million policy. The barn and the property owner is named as additional insured on the policy. It is well worth it for my peace of mind.

I don’t have an issue with this, but if a barn asked me to name them on my insurance policy I would at least want to review their policy first. If they are reputable, they certainly would have a significant liability policy but I would want to confirm that they did. I know some smaller barns that probably don’t have any commercial liability insurance. I could totally see them asking their boarders to carry it, and that would leave them exposed for any/all insurance claims, rather than the person actually handling/riding their horse.
