Equine Names and Terms vs. Same in Media

What terms or names do you see in the media which immediately bring to mind the equine version? I was watching an episode of The Mentalist titled “Red Rum” which is also reminiscent of The Shining. But the FIRST thought I had when I saw that episode title was the great Irish Thoroughbred champion Red Rum, and I suffered an instant of disappointment when I realized that there were no horses involved.

The other thing which happens all the time are news items about cities in foreign countries. Every mention on the news of Damascus brings to mind my mare’s pedigree rather than conflict in Syria and the city that horse was named after.

Broad Brush is a phrase I come across all the time, a common metaphor, but I always get a jolt and imagine that great Thoroughbred who was one of my favorites. There are others which elude me now, but it happens all the time. I’m sure many of you are in the same boat.

I always sit up for a second when I hear the news coverage of the latest mayor’s race.

I loved Damascus! He was one of my favorites when I was a girl.

Not a horse name, but an equine term: “vetted.”

Someone is always being vetted for their high profile job or political appointment. I always wonder, “Are they doing xrays?”

This is a great topic where I know I have hundreds of examples yet can recall none of them when asked. :joy:

Lemon Drop Kid is a classic Bob Hope movie, but to me, I only associate the name with the racehorse and sire.

I definitely knew the horse before I knew Giants Causeway was also a geologic attraction.

Every now and then I see a picture of Medaglia D’Oro expression and do a double take, because while I think I may have known that existed, I definitely associate the name with the horse more than anything.

Lemon Drop Kid was a Damon Runyon story before it was a movie. He wrote a number of short stories about the racetrack.

What about PPE during the pandemic?

I mean why would frontline workers need to do a pre-purchase exam?

When I hear Lemon Drop Kid I think of the champion Saddlebred that showed in the Fine Harness division in the '50s and was, I believe, the only Saddlebred ever to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Agreed on Giants Causeway.

I believe that there was a (human) family relationship between the saddlebred and the TB. He was co owned by Jeanne Vance, who I believe was the daughter of the owner of the famous sadddlebred. The saddlebred was registered as The Lemon Drop Kid.

Every time I heard PPE during the pandemic, I’d wonder if they were pulling blood or doing xrays.

I see Lemon Drop Kid and think of the fine harness horse.

I was only ten. Knew nothing about Fine Harness horses, but knew greatness when I saw it
