If by Richmond you mean Richmond, VA, then I’d start with Dr. Robin White at Virgina Tech. rrwhite@vt.edu.
I’m also an equine nutritionist, so if you have questions that can be addressed virtually, feel free to shoot me a PM any time!
I just want to know if what my horse is eating is “complete” and if she needs anything additional… I know in theory my vet can answer this, but I’d like a nutritionist’s opinion as well… is this something that can be done virtually or do you think that it would be better for someone to come out in person to look at my horse?
A general overview of your horse’s size/condition and diet can for sure be done virtually. If you want to message me the details, I’m happy to take a quick look and let you know if I think you need to make any adjustments or have someone do a hands-on assessment.
In theory, most vets don’t know enough about nutrition to evaluate, let alone balance a diet.
Any good nutritionist can work on a diet from anywhere, but they all need a starting point, which is a forage analysis.
definitely take MG up on her generous offer
Other options include a subscription to FeedXL, which does have limitations but it’s a reasonable quick starting point as long as you have a hay analysis.
Dr Clair Thunes of Clarity Equine Nutrition, and Dr Rachel Mottet of Legacy Equine Nutrition, as 2 I implicitly trust as well.
If you don’t have a forage analysis, then it’s a bit of a guess, which can be a reasonably good guesstimate based on general knowledge of average forages, and a hard look at the extras you feed.
Annie Emery Revolution Equine Nutrition is great!! On FB and has a website.
this came up in another thread in a FB group the other day, so worth putting here too:
Run from any “nutritionist” who uses hair analysis to tell you what nutrients your horse has too little or too much of. There’s zero proof that works, and there are all kinds of studies proving it’s useless for that
Ask what their credentials as. MSc at least, PhD preferably, WITH actual education in equine nutrition. They didn’t take some weekend course.
Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist.
