Equine Rehab facilities in Northern California

My dressage horse is just starting back to work after a very long (18 month) layup. Prior to his injury he was training at 3-4th level. We are having trouble getting him back to work under saddle because he is not in good enough condition to go back into full training, but since he is not working every day he feels “too good” on his days off, overdoes it in his pasture to the point of making himself sore, and then because he is sore, he doesn’t want to be ridden. Restricting him to his stall between training rides is not the answer because that just compounds the problem (too much energy for his own good).

So, I’m looking for a good rehab facility in Northern California (the closer to Sacramento the better) where we can hopefully break this cycle; i.e., where he can be reconditioned in a controlled environment so that he can gradually go back to work under saddle.

If anyone has experience with rehab facilities in this area that do this type of conditioning, I would appreciate hearing about your experience.

I cannot relate an experience but I do know of this place - Circle Oak Equine Rehabilitation in Petaluma. Just by looking at their website and having visited their facility for a short lecture on gastric ulcers, I can tell that it will cost an arm and a couple of legs. They really seem to tout their underwater treadmill and I did see an equineciser. Hopefully, you can find something a bit cheaper your way as the closer you get to the bay area…wow, do the prices skyrocket. Maybe UCDavis or Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center can provide a referral too. Sorry I’m not more help but good luck!

Pacific Equestrian Ctr offers a EuroWalker, as well as wraps, etc.
Perham Ranch in Elk Grove does mostly racehorse layup, very capable. Both are run by nice people who could probably offer referrals if they are full.

wildswan, I currently have a horse at Premier Equine in Oakdale. I haven’t been there personally but they are swimming and walking under tack a high level show jumper to put on condition with the less resistance on his joints

I’m not 100% clear whether you’re looking for rehab/conditioning under saddle or via Eurociser, swimming, etc. - but +1 to the Premier Equine recommendation. They are excellent in every sense of the word. In Oakdale, which is ~ 90 minutes from Sac I believe.

I’ve heard great things about Circle Oak as well but don’t have firsthand experience, and they’re in the North Bay.

You could look into Hossmore in Briones: http://www.hossmoor.com/equine.htm

Another vote for Premier Equine. I had a horse there a couple years ago for 6 months. They did a great job.

One more for Premier in Oakdale.
