Equinety, Tri-Amino, Nutramino?

A friend recommended trying Dawn on Equinety XL for suspensory and possible hock arthritis. It’s so expensive! I’ve read about Tri-Amino and Nutramino and I’m wondering what are the differences between the three? Anyone have experience with them?

TriAmino and Nutramino are fabulous if your horse isn’t getting the right protein in the right amounts! They are solely amino acid supplements. My older mare does fabulously on either one of them when she gets too fat for a ration balancer, and always has a great top line for her age. Not sure about the Equinety, they make an awful lot of claims…and the supplement doesn’t have the same amino acids as Tri and Nutramino.

It’s easy to see the GA for each of those (Nutramino and TriAmino are exactly the same), and see how they compare.

The facts remain that:

Lysine is the first limiting AA, meaning, every other AA and its benefit is limited by how much Lysine there is
Methionine is the 2nd limiting AA, meaning even if there’s enough lysine, if there isn’t enough methionine…

There’s a whole list on down the line of limitations.

Of horses who are AA-deficient, most will be low in lysine and/or methionine, which is why most AA supplements have ample amounts of those.

Threonine, the 3rd AA in those 2 products (note I said 3rd, not 3rd limiting) is debateably a common deficiency.

Others are much less debateably commonly deficient. That doesn’t mean some horses don’t have a higher need for some of the lesser AAs found in Equinety. Most, probably do not.

So would you say it’d be better to try either TriAmino or Nutramino rather than the Equinety? The cost difference is drastic - Equinety is double the cost of the others. The only difference besides the lesser AAs found in it, that I’ve seen, is the human-grade ingredients.

That is my opinion, yes.

that said, I know a very small # of people who have found great results in Equinety, and I’ve seen the pictures. However, they have never tried NA or TA. Me, I like to start simple and more cost-effective, unless there’s a compelling reason to do otherwise.

So related question -
I have an older gelding with liver issues and Cushings/IR. He’s skinny, so the vet wants him to get something high protein, but he is The. Pickiest. Eater. EVER. Tried Buckeye Grow n Win, Purina Super Sport, and two other 30% ration balancers - he won’t touch them.

Does anyone know which is the most palatable, out of the Equinety, TriAmino, or Nutramino? Or, other than Equinety, do the other two provide samples? I don’t want to buy a whole container, just to find out he won’t touch it… ya know?

@DoodlesMom I know that you can purchase the Nutramino in individual packets (50 doses for $30-ish). I’m sure that if you find that he won’t touch it, you could find someone who would like the rest of the packets. Not sure on the palatability on those but the packets might be worth a try!

Horsetech will send you a sample, I bet. They do for a lot of their products. Just email. They’re great!

Can’t answer the question on which is most palatable, because I’ve only ever used Nutramino. But, I also own a ridiculously picky horse and she had no issue with the Nutramino (surprisingly!). I was really happy with the results I saw with Nutramino. I only stopped using it because I switched back to a RB for the sake of simplicity when I moved last year; will probably start it up again soon.

Thanks guys! I’ll email and see if I can get a sample for Mr Picky Pants. Good to know that Nutramino is at least somewhat palatable!

ETA: Horsetech emailed me back already and are going to send a sample! They also can add flavoring if need be (which is sugar free). Really great customer service.

I love HorseTech! As an added bonus, if you need any other supplements, they will do custom blends for you! My mare is on a custom blend of the Nutramino, Chromium/Magnesium, and Vitamin E. Super easy to feed (one scoop) and cost effective. Been using their products for years, and highly recommend.

BTW, one of my horses as with a trainer for a while, and she put him on Platinum, and he refused to eat it. Back on his HorseTech blend, and he was happy again. The HorseTech seems to be more palatable.
