Has anyone had the experience of their horse developing fairly significant diarrhea after starting equioxx?
My 23-year-old had been on it for two weeks when the diarrhea began. Since the only thing that had changed was adding equioxx, it seemed the likely candidate. Immediately stopped giving it to him. The diarrhea was severe enough that vet ran all the tests and cultures to make certain there wasn’t something else going on but all came back negative. Vet had me give him biosponge three times a day for three days and started Assure Plus. Thankfully the diarrhea has stopped.
What’s especially frustrating is for the six years I’ve had the horse, he’s always had an iffy digestive system and for the last three years I’ve been dealing with his fecal water syndrome. Every test in the book was run. Every probiotic, prebiotic, etc was tried. What finally completely solved it was switching him from orchard grass hay to Teff hay. Within 48 hours of starting Teff, his “leakage” stopped. It’s been heaven for ten months to not have to wash his butt and tail every day.
A couple of days after this latest diarrhea started, Clay decided he HATED Teff and refuses to eat a single piece of it. He literally went off it mid bale after devouring it for months. Same load of hay, and as I said, he stopped halfway through a bale. What I’m predicting will happen is that now he’s back on orchard, the leaky runs will start again.
Also frustrating is that the Equioxx was helping with his arthritis and I was excited to get my riding partner back. He gets Osphos, which has made a huge difference the last five years but it was clear this summer that he needed something else, hence the equioxx.
Any ideas? Thanks.
