Equioxx and diarrhea

Has anyone had the experience of their horse developing fairly significant diarrhea after starting equioxx?

My 23-year-old had been on it for two weeks when the diarrhea began. Since the only thing that had changed was adding equioxx, it seemed the likely candidate. Immediately stopped giving it to him. The diarrhea was severe enough that vet ran all the tests and cultures to make certain there wasn’t something else going on but all came back negative. Vet had me give him biosponge three times a day for three days and started Assure Plus. Thankfully the diarrhea has stopped.

What’s especially frustrating is for the six years I’ve had the horse, he’s always had an iffy digestive system and for the last three years I’ve been dealing with his fecal water syndrome. Every test in the book was run. Every probiotic, prebiotic, etc was tried. What finally completely solved it was switching him from orchard grass hay to Teff hay. Within 48 hours of starting Teff, his “leakage” stopped. It’s been heaven for ten months to not have to wash his butt and tail every day.

A couple of days after this latest diarrhea started, Clay decided he HATED Teff and refuses to eat a single piece of it. He literally went off it mid bale after devouring it for months. Same load of hay, and as I said, he stopped halfway through a bale. What I’m predicting will happen is that now he’s back on orchard, the leaky runs will start again.

Also frustrating is that the Equioxx was helping with his arthritis and I was excited to get my riding partner back. He gets Osphos, which has made a huge difference the last five years but it was clear this summer that he needed something else, hence the equioxx.

Any ideas? Thanks.

My appy also has a touchy stomach and got diarrhea from Equioxx after being on it less than 10 days. Bio sponge (a lot bigger dose than you needed) finally got it under control but it took months. Now I give him a handful of Outlast GI Treats - main ingredient charcoal- every day and it keeps his tummy happy. But things were really scary there for a while. He’s pretty much known as a No NSAIDs Ever horse now, and I have another in the herd who is the same. Unfortunately with that one, a vet prescribed him Aspirin, then previcox, which was essentially a recipe for instant hind gut ulcers in his case. No diarrhea with him, just refused to touch his hay, picked at grain and mostly wandered around his pasture unhappily. Misoprostol powder snapped him out of that and after thirty days he was back to normal but he’s another that sports the “no NSADS” label on his chart. Some of them just can’t tolerate even the mildest stuff. 🤷”â™€ï¸

My horse was on Equioxx for about a month until she had what the vet decided was a spasmodic colic. She never had diarrhea with it, sorry to hear your horses have/ had it. I immediately took her off it and she has been fine ever since.

Hope you are able to get your horse right.

Is this the first time he’s been on Equioxx? While it’s a safER NSAID, it can still cause ulcers, which could be the cause of the diarrhea.

Is there another grass hay you can find? I know OG really is the cause of a lot of free fecal water cases (why, I have nooooo idea), but I wonder if he could have it as just part of his diet, not all, and be ok?

Did you go through that bale? Maybe something was really off about it? I hope for your sake he will decide it’s edible again!

Had a similar situation with my 25 year old mare. Started using Stable Mix Senior, and the diarrhea is completely gone, and she remains on Equioxx. Stable Mix has been a life saver for her.

Equioxx normally has less side effects than other NSAID choices, but that doesn’t mean it is side-effect-free.

If you’d like to keep him on the Equioxx for the intended benefits, can you possibly do GastroGuard or Omeprazole at the same time?

I’ve heard this before. Clay has Cushing’s so I do my best to feed low sugar products (yes, I know orchard grass is higher in sugar, which is why I was thrilled he loved Teff hay until he didn’t). Do you know if Stable Mix Senior is low in sugar?

They have Stable Mix Lite, which is Teff based, and under 11% NSC. My mare has Cushings as well, and has done brilliantly on the regular Senior. The Lite was difficult to find in my area. I have found the best price is at Tractor Supply

Alfalfa?

Are you using any glucoscamine products, like Adequan?

My old (late :frowning: ) guy had two colics and we tried gabapentin, but I didn’t think it was super effective.

Adequan is polysulfated glycosaminoglycan. That’s different from glucosamine.

No problems here with Equioxx. We feed a cup of Outlast prior to riding, which is supposed to help with stomach acid/ulcers, fur what that’s worth.

Yes, Equioxx is an NSAID. While it is supposed to be gentler on the GI tract than Bute, it can have effects. My own senior citizen has issues and was unable to tolerate daily Equioxx for arthritis without getting runny/soft manure. Per my vet’s recommendation, I took him off of it waited until his manure returned to normal and then used it intermittently or as-needed only… for him the best thing that worked is 1 tablet of Equioxx just 3 times a week (and always with a meal). He’s acting like a spring chicken now and his manure is fine  I don’t see any ulcer symptoms in him at this point, but ymmv.

I think that’s what I’d like to try. His manure is back to normal and he’s back to eating Teff hay. He’s semi-retired and In my ideal world, I’d give him equioxx only for the days I’m riding at more than a walk (we do trails one day, lungeing one day and ring work the third day). He’s turned out all day so he gets to move around as much as he’d like.

Would it be effective give to give him the pill the night before a ride or in the morning on the day of a ride? Before the diarrhea started it was clear that daily equioxx was helping him so I’m trying to walk that line between giving him something to help without causing the diarrhea to return.

Of course I’ll check with my vet!

Definitely check with your vet, especially considering all the issues he’s been thru. Poor guy.
I wonder if he has allergies causing the GI issues?

FWIW, I think I kinda noticed mine was better if he had also had one earlier in the week. ie., If you ride Saturday morning, then give one Equioxx Wednesday dinner and one Equioxx Friday dinner and see how he does on Saturday?
Good luck!

Update - Clay’s diarrhea is completely gone and he’s back to eating Teff hay. Apparently he’s one of those horses who can’t tolerate previcox. We’re now 60 days since he got his latest shot of osphos and he’s feeling almost 100% sound.

thanks for all the suggestions.
