Equioxx paste overdose

Anyone ever accidently overdose with equioxx? I’ve already contact my vet. They said we could do fluids and run kidney values and hospitalize overnight for observation, or we can watch and wait and pull kidney values tomorrow or the following day. Did say to feed mashes and get as much fluids in him as I can get him to eat. He will drink water off the top of the mash so getting fluids in him isn’t a problem, I don’t think.

I read it is safe up to 12.5 times the recommended dose.

He got about 3-4x the recommended amount. I think we are probably okay… But still very worried.

Next time stay away from the paste if you can get the pill form. I thought I had the plunger locked but I’m guessing I turned it the wrong way.

3-4x a 57gm dose is kindasorta the same as 3-4gm of bute vs 1gm, and I’m not sure anyone would go for hospitalizing for that. How much does he weigh?

The technical dosing is 0.1mg/kg. That’s 50mg for a 500kg (1100lb) horse, but 60mg for a 600kg (1320lb) horse, which means if he’s on the larger side, then 171-228mg isn’t quite as much of an OD as it seems

It’s unlikely it will cause damage, but pulling blood to be sure is never a bad idea.

Thoughts for extra water - 2tbsp salt per gallon of water, for an isotonic solution, is a big hit with some horses. Adding a handful of alfalfa pellets, or rice bran (for 'sweet water") in a 5 gallon bucket is a big hit with some

The more I read about it, the more I think we are going to be just fine. Looks like some people have been using 3 pills a day as a loading dose. So maybe I don’t need to panic. Sure did scare me!

For what its worth I know someone that has been giving her horse 8 equioxx a day for a year. That’s right. I said 8. Horse’s liver values are remarkably still fine. Horse is still stunningly lame. A tragedy all around but I"m guessing the overdose today will not matter much…

My thoughts exactly…

8 tablets a day! That sounds like a massive overdose. My old mare stopped responding to Equioxx towards the end and I switched her to Sodium Naproxen. The Naproxen worked well for her - even better than the Equioxx at reducing her pain. I kept her on that until I had to have her put down. Never did have any side effects on the Naproxen.

Uh that’s plain awful.

OP I hope your horse is ok. That dose doesn’t sound so crazy. I suspect he will be!

Wait we can give horses Ibuprofen??

Sodium Naproxen is not the same as ibuprofen. They are similar but not the same.

That said, ibuprofen can be given to horses, but Sodium Naproxen lasts longer/is more effectie

Interesting. I would have never considered giving my horses either of them. Though I guess people give them aspirin so why not.

Back when Equioxx first came out, we used to give a loading dose. I think it was twice the standard dose and I find that people usually underestimate how much their horses weigh. So, it’s possible you didn’t over dose as much as you think.

That said, I’d definitely check his kidney values. To know if you need to continue to flush them.

My horse will lick two 5 gallon buckets dry overnight if I put 3 scoops of blue Gatorade powder in each.

I’m confused how you can overdose on the paste. One tube = one dose. Wouldn’t you have to give multiple tubes, which begs the question why. Sorry if I missed something here.

HA! Good point! The paste syringe is a single 57mg dose.

Maybe this is a 600lb pony? 500lb?

What about the half-life? I remember seeing it as around 36 hours for Previcox. It indicates how long it takes for the body to decrease the concentration by half.

Yes, he’s a small pony. At any rate he is absolutely fine. But he eats absolutely anything so I gave him some activated charcoal capsules within 2 hours of ingestion. Surprisingly he ate those with his grain. I have no idea how much medication actually made it into his system, but he had no adverse effects.

He certainly is a funny one. He was biting into the capsules and had charcoal all over his nose, and was still begging for more! I thought for sure he would refuse to eat those. I have yet to find something he won’t eat.
