The best commentators I think I’ve ever heard. So insightful, articulate, and knowledgeable!
Who did it?
Ava Stearns and Tessa Downey
Thanks. Good for them. Ava always does a good job.
Ava is, IMO, the best commentator out there right now for livestreams, and I’m very glad that she continues to do it. It’s always such a breath of fresh air to get commentary from someone so knowledgeable, kind, and who speaks to say what’s important and relevant to what’s going on in the ring. There are some other commentators who will talk just to hear themselves talk, and she never does that.
Ava has also been doing the commentary for the hunter sections at JHF with a variety of other co-commentators at times.
I think Ava and Tessa did a nice job and have a lot of potential. They are both top competitors and thoughtful young women. That said, I think there is a lot of room to develop the scope of what is covered in the commentary. It is such a great opportunity for education at a lot of different levels, beyond just responding to the action in the ring. For example, the history of the sport, the history of judging, and the developments of both of those areas. I hope the producers of the livestream will consider reaching out to other commentators to complement these younger competitors.
I always find it interesting to see people’s preferences on things like this! I personally would hate getting a lecture like that in the middle of a livestream - I’m there to see the here and now, not hear about the way-back-when, and that’s one of the things that drives me crazy about some of the other people who sometimes do commentary
Just goes to show there’s no one right way to do it!
I think there can be an intelligent balance. As I suggested it is an opportunity to convey multiple levels of information and education. There are multiple audiences for these events and the livestream becomes a relatively permanent record for future audiences - so a good opportunity to convey a lot. I’m also not interested in hearing a lecture but I am interested in the history of the sport when it fits with the performance before us.
