If you are cantering and the announcer says “trot your horses, all riders trot”, do you post or sit the trot? This happened in our class today and I was not sure what the correct thing is.
Post. Always post unless specified to sit
Ah, thanks. I wasn’t sure what the “default” was. I sat. As I went by the judge she told me I could post. I still won the class. I’ve never been in an eq class where they did not specify rising or sitting so I was clueless when it happened. (It is an adult division and I am the only one on our local circuit that does not cringe when they ask for the sitting trot. Only advantage I have from riding dressage for 20 years - LOL)
It depends whether you are in an equitation flat class or hunter under saddle class. In the latter case, you will sinply hear “trot” called for, and posting or not isn’t specified, but do post!
In an equitation class, posting or sitting should always be specified.
If you are working with an experienced judge/ring master, chances are you will never hear an unspecified call; it’s sometimes happens though, when either a judge without equitation experience or a ringmaster/announcer that ‘edits’ what the judge calls for will fail to be specific.
It was an eq class. I know in a hunter under saddle class to always post the trot and you can do half seat or 2 point at the canter. I had just never been in an eq flat class where it was NOT specified whether to post or sit.
It was one of our local circuit shows and we were literally the last class of the show. It had poured rain that morning so everyone had been dealing with difficult conditions all day. I think it was just an oversight on the announcers part and the judge didn’t notice that the announcer didn’t specify. I decided to play it safe and sit but everyone else was posting. Judge obviously didn’t hold it against me and told me I could post when I rode by. It was just confusing to me and I forgot to ask my trainer about it. (We were all SO exhausted and ready to go home by the time that class ended.)
Post. ALWAYS. In eq, they should tell you if you are supposed to sit.
Yes, now I know to post if not specified - thanks all for the answer!
(Of course next show is probably the last show I will ever do an eq class so I don’t have to worry about it anymore. But, it is nice to know in case it happens again next show.)
