yes, that’s what I was meaning, as in the judge determined (their opinion) that he lied. People can use that information as they wish.
Came across this and thought “what a weird coincidence”
Would love to see a Law & Order SVU episode about this one.
Faking cancer seems to be a go-to when an employer offers benefits and paid time off for such a diagnosis. For certain people, that is.
I’m not sure how people think they will get away with it. But maybe they are aware of other people who did, and that’s why they give it a try.
That is a weird coincidence.
What is with people thinking that faking cancer in court documents is a smart idea?
Unbelievable.
And the same type of cancer!
On top of ‘I don’t know what people are thinking’ for faking cancer, I don’t know what people are thinking for a cancer that is going to kill the patient. In fairly short order.
I mean, like Thread Title Guy, what happens when you don’t die. Like everyone else who truly suffered that particular cancer.
But … repeatedly we see how little much of the gp knows about basic human biology. Of all types.
The only part I find surprising is that it took so long for the people directly involved with Eric to figure out that he was pulling a fast one. It’s not as though this happened in the pre-internet era, when research meant spending hours in the library. Especially puzzling considering, as someone above noted, he chose to fake a type of cancer with a 100% fatality rate, whose victims usually die within a couple of years.
And the artificial kidney story…probably getting away with the cancer lie for so long emboldened him to the point where he thought anything he fabricated would sell convincingly, internet or not. And it did, for a little while.
People don’t find what they aren’t looking for.
I think it says a lot about the default trust that some people had in him. For whatever reason. They believed.
And that he had the expectation that the belief would be universal and continuous. Apparently he didn’t self-educate,either, through internet searches, before he picked a disease that is quickly fatal.
People like fairy tale endings and it is hard not to want to feel hopeful for miracles. Plus, Canada doesn’t have a lot of “Hero” athletes: we aren’t going out of our way to discredit the ones we have.
But Canada has Terry Fox, who wasn’t just hero athlete. He is a legendary hero human being. Though I’ve read his story several dozen times by now, and seen the movie, I still can’t think of him without tearing up.
Terry Fox is a true hero indeed and a National Treasure. Unfortunately no fairy tale ending. No miracle.
I’m not sure what makes Eric Lamaze a hero? Terry Fox is truly a hero. We have boatloads of successful athletes who are wonderful role models for upcoming athletes.
I mean he won three olympic medals? In Canada that was enough to make him a sports hero which is I’m assuming the kind of hero CHT was referring to.
I mean, the comeback story from addict to Olympian is enough to get a lot of people; the public loves an underdog.
I was a huge fan as a kid, largely because he had Hickstead, the one horse I absolutely idolized. I still remember when Hicksteads death in Germany was announced on the radio, I was in the car on the way home from the Royal Winter Fair, where my mom and I had spent the day scheming for how to get tickets to see Hickstead jump the following weekend at the Royal… but it wasn’t meant to be.
He WAS a hero. He was a huge hero and idol to me personally as a teenager for his amazing come back and incredible rides on Hickstead.
Not anymore, he broke my heart immensely with his actions. I have a print of Lamaze and Hickstead hanging in my mud room and can’t decide what to do with it. I love Hickstead but I don’t want to look at Erics lying pathetic face on my wall.
Just remember Hickstead in all his glory.
Don’t let Lamaze, who had issues in his past (and now obviously has other serious issues as well as addiction) diminish your memories of a great horse. They were a good team.
Honest thought: put a smiley face sticker over his face on the poster? Or something like that makes you laugh or smile when you see it?
They were a great pair. What happened with Lamaze after Hickstead died so tragically, to me doesn’t take away from the great rounds they had together.
Hickstead is gone, and now Lamaze has to live with his dishonest medical stories and horse trading.
I can separate the two. I don’t have his poster on my wall, but I think if I did, I would keep it to remember Hickstead in all his glory.
