Erik Duvander Out As U.S. Eventing Performance Director

Wow, I’ve heard Peter Wylde is a very good trainer as well as having top level experience and results. Seems so strange the USEF is purposely losing two top people in Erik and Peter.

On the other hand, it would be SO refreshing to see a woman in either position.

Maybe Chris Bartle is tired of the cold wet winters in Germany and the UK. He wants to move to sunny California and is open to coaching the US team.

I usually take the “USEF is the worst” complaints with a grain of salt, because I’m not the ones in the trenches doing their job. But what the actual heck?!?

I found it interesting that the collection of team riders continuing on with Peter were listed by name. I found it even more interesting that the one(s) most of us assumed were unhappy with ED and team were not listed. I think Horse Sport just covertly tried to answer the questions we were asking.

Better yet - Yogi Breisner.

Well, that’s sad if that is the case. We do need supporters but at what cost?

It’s starting to seem more and more like a top donor/owner was unhappy with the way the team was being handled and threatened to pull support if things weren’t changed.

That would make a lot more sense than one or two athletes being less than thrilled with team leadership and the how things were done.

It would also explain the absolute lack of transparency.

Well, there are certain unhappy athletes coincidentally connected to top donor(s).

But is the impetus to let them go coming from the athletes making demands and the donor/ horse owner going to bat for them? Or because the donor is frustrated that none of their horses got adequate attention as far as team selection and activities, and the riders themselves are just staying quiet?

Sounds like…reading between the very muddy lines…that certain riders, likely connected to massive supporters, didn’t feel they received training/support/visits possibly enough from ED? Other riders having mentioned you had to be proactive.

Keep in mind, COVID last year and Olympics this year, I’m sure he could only spread himself so thin. Meanwhile the results support him having made an impact.

I guess some riders felt left out, or unsupported. Maybe they have powerful people surrounding them who saw this and thought it wasn’t right. Maybe those people have their own coaches and ED didn’t feel the need to be as present.

It sounds as though the issue is with the operation of the HP program.

Well, I don’t know. This is all purely speculation.

We know from PD and LHS that there was internal strife and conversations with riders. LHS said she was fighting for ED to stay, which to me, implies there was some connected individuals suggesting he should go.

We know ED, JA, and PW surprisingly did not have their contracts renewed and it was not their decision.

We know many riders have shown their support for ED et al. We know other riders have remained silent, which means nothing on its own, but is interesting given the context that some people were unhappy with ED.

From the donor angle, I think it’s plausible a rider could be influencing a donor… maybe not directly for the rider’s gain or the donor’s gain, but in a “the reason USA isn’t dominate is because of the management” manner. If that makes any sense at all.

That’s just where my head is with this. I’m probably reading too much into it.

At least two (Doug & Will) were not quiet behind the scenes. As an outsider, Doug & Will’s opposition to ED has seemed at odds with their recent success under him. If you’re a coach, sometimes you only get credit from certain riders when they fail. When they do well, they did it in spite of you.

I have heard criticism from both also in the past. Both are not shy to speak their mind. Yet interestingly, DP’s in-laws publicly commented praise for ED. You may know that already given your name.

I just read the Horse+Sport article by Nancy Jaffer about Peter Wylde that was linked upthread. While factual and journalistic in it’s presentation, it gave me a distinct “pot stirring” vibe.

I am about as far outside as anyone can be so anything I say is purely speculative, but I still feel like something smells really fishy about the complete housecleaning without any comment on the USEF side. It seems like if the intent was about changing the approach, there would have been more explanation. It feels like ED, JA, PW and crew collectively either did something really bad or made someone with a lot of clout very angry.

Other than the lack of support for Will during Flag-Gate, what were some of the specific grievances being aired against ED? (I vaguely remember some, but it’s been some time).

According to the USEA report from Day 1 of the convention, “Moroney will be speaking again tomorrow in the USEF High Performance Athletes Open Forum to address the recent changes in the high performance eventing program.” Will be interesting to hear what he has to say.

Will had a lot of praise for him I thought?

It looks like USEA members can watch the livestream of that session at 11am tomorrow (Friday): https://useventing.com/membership/convention/convention-livestream

If anyone watches, please give a report of what is said!

I’m a bit surprised they are showing Sue Dyson videos on the “open” stream.;
