ERU or something else?

rehab horse came in about 3 months ago. He’s on stall rest for a torn suspensory. Here’s the problem. Every few weeks (2-3 maybe) he gets a squinty eye that is a tad bit runny. After 1 dose of antibiotic eye ointment (no steroids) the eye is back to normal. We usually treat for 5 days after symptoms resolve. It’s the fact that it comes back every 2-3 weeks that is concerning to me. Appetite for hay/grain is great as is water intake. It is currently winter here, so I doubt it’s allergies.

We have called an ophthalmologist and are waiting on a call back to set up an appointment. In the mean time; any thoughts? TIA

Does he lay in poop and maybe get some in his eye either from direct contact or rubbing his eye on a mucky foreleg?

He is a pig pen. He will roll on his daily walks and get himself a lovely mud mask of red clay.

ERU is possible, but he may also need his tear ducts flushed or have allergies, or maybe a scratch that isn’t healing with only 5 days treatment.

Let us know what the Doc says.
