Estimated dimensions for hay and equipment storage?

I’ll ned space for about 60 tons of 70-90lb, two string bales, plus room for tractor and general equipment (drag, etc) and up to 3 pallets of pellet bedding.

Would 80’ by 20’ work? Any input is very much appreciated! Thank you.

Crap, sorry, eta: looks like I’ll need bigger or have hay delivered twice a year. Sorry to waste post space.

Measure everything and do the math, then add more. You always need more! I added 5’ to my small storage space at the last minute (which was an additional 80 sq. ft.) and wish I had done even more.

Don’t forget to factor in being able to access everything!

Do you already own the tractor? If so, go measure it, WITH a bale spear or mower on, so if needed, you can leave the implement on and just park it as-is without detaching it. Make sure you allow yourself some “wiggle room” - make the space a bit longer and wider than the measurements.

We have a 45hp New Holland with a FEL. It fits perfectly in a 11’ wide x 22’ deep space with the bale spear on. 22’ isn’t enough to park it with the 6’ mower on, but we can drop the mower at the back wall of the shed, detach it, and then park the tractor with the FEL resting on the mower.

If you are wanting all your tractor implements to be under cover, you need to take into account how they are accessed. You can’t just stack them in like dominos or you won’t be able to access them without moving another one.

You can always stack the bales higher to condense them… We stack a hundred 70lb bales SEVEN high in order to fit them in our hay shed. Builds muscle.

Awesome, thank you! No tractor or implements bought yet, considerations for them is all new to me. So 20’ is likely going my to be too narrow then, should plan for 30’ wide at least? Spot for shed has a lot of room length-wise, not so much for depth so planning on long and skinny and how to best make that work. Hay will be delivered and stacked (luxury! Have been bringing in bales from access field with hand cart and hand stacking, don’t even own a 4-wheeler) so could go quite tall with the building if better.

Our quonset barn is 80’ x 40’.
We can put 2300 small square, two string bales of alfalfa in there four on the ground on their side, that is almost 12’ for the whole 80’ length and up kind of high.
With 80’ x 20’, wow you can put a whole semi load, that is 630 bales in 1/3 of that space and have the rest to store the 3 pallets of bedding bales and tractor and room left over, I would say.

Thanks Bluey! Crunching numbers and am making errors along the way  love having others’ dimensions and how they have worked.

I just passed out from shed envy. I can cram 75 square bales in my 10’ x 10’ shed that is hanging in the thanks to duct tape. I have a lot of trees, but can’t seem to find the one with cash on it!!!

Um, carry on…

I’d do the math & make sure you have space for an entire year’s worth of hay.

Don’t know where you are, but nothing makes me queasier than NOT having my barn full of hay before Midwest Winter arrives.

Nothing worse than sweating bullets eyeballing your remaining hay when delivery could be problematical.

A pallet of pellets (say that 3 times fast! :D) won’t take up much space.
I currently have one pallet - 50 bags, stacked 5 high, could go higher - on pallets taking up maybe a space 4’X8’.

As for tractor, I join wildlifer in envy - my “heavy equipment” is a riding mower towing a dumpcart that can handle maybe 300#.
