Estimating height?

I have a horse that I am wanting to go look at. She is 11 months old and per the owner, 10hh. She is a quarter horse. Current owner does not know anything about the parents. Does anyone know an estimate on how tall she may be?

A 10hh yearling is tiny. That is big mini or shetland pony or very small pony size. It would have to literally grow 16" at the shoulder to make a 14hh pony size at maturity. Or an even more unbelievable 20" to make 15hh. That is normal small or grade quarter horse range. Those adult heights aren’t consistent with a 10hh yearling. But who knows if their estimate is even remotely accurate. It sounds like the sellers don’t have any idea of actual parentage, just guessing or hoping or repeating that is a QH, so nothing worth putting too much stock in at all.

Tons of string test theories out there. I’m sure some are better than others as far as relative accuracy, but I’d not buy a horse on any of them if I didn’t have any idea of genetic potential, etc.

At 11 months, it’s almost at the 12 month mark which is the better time to do the tests, as the lower legs are all but done growing vertically.

But yeah, 10h at 11 months is small. A general rule of thumb for horses is add 2h to the 12 month height, and 1h to the 24 month height. Ponies are a bit off from there. But you’re looking most likely at a mature height of a small pony. Maybe a small medium.

To give you an idea my 11 month old qh is 14hh or a bit over. Her dam a maiden 16.1hh and sire 16.2hh. I am hoping for 16hh but she is small in comparison to my friends hunt seat yearlings. It if the 2hh added on at 12 months is correct she is right on track. Although I did the string test on her and got a smaller size. I doubt it’s right though looking st her
