Etalon DNA testing- is it accurate?

Someone posted on Facebook that the company does not give accurate results. Has anyone had problems with incorrect results? Just wondering if I should use them or go elsewhere. I really just need the 5 panel, but their mini panel is not that much more expensive then the 5 panel is elsewhere.

Not personally, but after seeing some of their mess ups on a couple of horse color groups, I’d stick with UC Davis. They have messed up tests on HYPP positive horses and Frame that I’ve seen recently.

I have used UCD. I have a sorrel sabino Paint gelding. The color results for Etalon and UCD Davis are identical: e/e, LWO/n, W20/n. UCD limited the number of white genes they tested for, and he does not have Sb1. Sabino shows up in a few other breeds without Sb1. He has roaning and a few other characteristics that I think result from another as yet undiscovered gene that affects white.

Etalon does the testing for APHA (American Paint Horse Assn). I had the minipanel done.and he tested negative for HYPP. There are results for quite a few medical conditions. There also are some behaviors. I found it interesting that he had 2 copies of “curiousity” vs. “vigilant.” We moved to a new barn where no one knew either of us. There were quite a few comments that he was curious.

I haven’t had any problems with Etalon and I haven’t seen any problems reported. What and where are the mess ups? e/e, LWO/n, W20/n. is a lethal white overo. If that is all you need to get a sabino there would be one on every corner, or intersection, depending on where you are located.

There’s been some 5 or 6 panel tests with errors, on person’s horse tested negative for HYPP and ended up having an attack in the trailer one day. I know what a LWO horse is. Saw a picture of an obvious one that Etalon said way n/n for LWO. Also tobiano horses tested as negative for tobiano. Personally if they’re going to screw up colour testing, I’m not going to trust them with testing for genetic defects.

I’m not sure what you mean by sabino, you definitely need more than LWO/ and W20 to get a sabino (I mean one that actually tests SB1, which is the only sabino). A horse can also be LWO even without W20.
