Etiquette for contacting Breeders of former race horse also ordering videos

So I just bought an OTTB. And this is the first one I have owned that came with the papers. I went to equibase and searched my horse. Herring Farm in Kentucky was where he was bred. What is the etiquette for contacting them? Do they get annoyed at being contacted or do they appreciate it? Do breeders usually keep photos of the babies? Or yearling sale photos? I was hoping to get a yearling sale photo but not sure how breeder would feel about being contacted.

Also my horse’s races are on video does anyone know how to get a copy? I only hoping to get the race he won. Thanks for the help.

People are people, they obviously don’t all react to things exactly the same way. Most people are kind and will respond nicely to a polite request for information. Contact the tracks he won at to buy a copy of the video.

I think most breeders, even the larger ones, are happy to hear from new owners. Smaller breeders most likely will also be happy to share baby pictures (I know I always do!). Just be courteous and they should be the same. Email or a phone call are fine. Be patient - it is a stereotype, but I find it to be true - race folk can be slow to respond lol!

As Laurierace said, contact the race track where the horse won. They all have websites, so google it and check on the contacts page. If you do not see a number for the track photographer or videographer, just call the Racing Office and they will transfer you or give you the number. There will be a cost for the video. You can also sign up for Equibase - they may have the video there for you to watch (check under Race Replays), it just depends how old the win is.

Good luck and enjoy your OTTB.

Congrats on your new OTTB and welcome to the fun of owning and showing a Thoroughbred

Here is a website that may have his auction photo http://www.foaltrack.com/

You can look up his auction results here http://www.bloodhorse.com/auctions-tool/ (You may need to search by his dams name as he probably wasnt registered with a name if sold as a yearling)

If you have an equibase account you should be able to view his video directly from their site. I think the digital versions of the videos are $8

Some Race Win Photos can be found online - where did your horse win his race?

As the others said - be patient when calling the farms and keep in mind these large farms are businesses and probably dont have photos of each foal other than registration pics. The mare may have also been sold in foal or with the foal at her side, sometimes resulting in conflicting information on the papers.

Thank you for posting this. I have had my own awkward contacts about my horses, and I want to know the right way to do it.

There have been many threads just like this one that lead to cordial relationships between breeder and OTTB owner - sharing stories, exchanging Christmas cards and photo updates and even visits. That is the best outcome. You can write a letter regaling the OTTBs current life and send a few photos (or email). Hopefully, you will hear back and maybe get some fun stories about your OTTB early years. Good luck! And congrats - hope you have a blast with your new TB.

I checked the foaltrack web site, no luck he wasn’t listed. But I did find him in the blood horse search. Unfortunately, he was registered with that name. Big Red Daddy, right from a yearling such a shame. I haven’t had any luck coming up with information on his breeding farm. I googled Herring Farms and didn’t find anything. I ordered his video, and his racing pictures from the one race he won.

Yeah!!! ![]( found his yearling sale picture!!!

Here is the link I hope it works. I am so happy!!!

Very nice!

I don’t know the original breeders but I have to believe that someone as enthusiastic as you would certainly be welcome.
