Evaluating Strength / One-sidedness in Horses

I have a horse that is different to the right versus the left and it led me to wonder how you tell what is causing the difference. I always want to learn so I thought I’d raise it here to get some thoughts.

Let me preference it with he’s fully sound, no major medical issues, sees a chiro routinely. Just an imbalance between left and right leads. We’re focusing on conditioning this winter.

Right: Faster, wants to dive in on circles and he’s a bit twisted out on the hind end. More speed to his canter. He bends easier to the right when I get him straightened out.

Left: Requires more leg to maintain impulsion. His harder direction regarding bend, definitely stiffer in the neck this direction.

So, how do you tell if he’s stronger on the right which is why he doesn’t need as much support, or if he’s weaker which is why he’s trying to rush the canter? What sort of things do you look for or feel to help you determine the cause?

I highly recommend this Podcast on this exact subject; https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-horse-first-a-veterinary-sport-horse-podcast/id1435735981?i=1000496616927

Most horses are naturally bent in one direction. Sounds like he is contracted to the right. It’s a straightness issue not just a pure strength issue. Lateral work in hand and then in the saddle starting at the walk will help stretch him to be less bent.
