Event Rider to Jumper Rider

He is already getting ribbons at WEF in the 1.50 jumper classes. So it seems like it will be a smooth transition.

He’s been showing consistently in the jumpers at Tryon for the past year or so, I definitely agree that he seems to be adjusting well to the change of discipline, he’s even been entered in a few of the derbies there and had placings in the top 5 with a former event horse

He did his first grand prix 20 years ago - probably helps!

He also won a $100k class at Ocala a few years back.

In my circle of friends, we are going to be most interestes to see what happens when the bulk of his rides are no longer eventers, but purpose bred and competed show jumpers. He’s done it through now on horses that started out eventing, for the most part.

A talented athlete is a talented athlete. No surprise he is doing well!
Like Boyd’s recent video with the Bluman brothers, they showed their skill immediately having never ridden XC and I dare say looked even more comfortable the Boyd!

That was a great video, and so neat to see. I really enjoy watching elite riders trying something new, and seeing what skills translate (like Anna Buffini schooling cross country as well).

I did chuckle at one of the Bluman brothers admitting he wasn’t really aiming when Boyd corrected him for jumping the high side of the brush.

I’m wondering if the one Bluman will be the first rider in half a century or so to do two different disciplines at the same Olympics in Los Angeles.

Or the first one that I know of, anyway.

This reminds me of this article:

He’s doing pretty big classes bridle-less, but he was purely a western rider not that long ago. It just goes to show that good riding is good riding!

With one of his horses, his young stallion I believe, he was eventing, and doing the jumpers and hunter derbies, and placing very well in each discipline.

That’s a pretty neat trick. What is the horse’s name?

My daughter has ridden with a Liberty Lariat since her beginning of time. Usually bareback and she has jumped a few of our horses with one while schooling cross country fences here at home, for fun. It builds a firm foundation of trust and communication.

Quiberon, has been gelded now and is for sale, according to the latest COTH article: https://www.chronofhorse.com/article/new-year-new-sport-olympic-eventer-doug-payne-talks-about-his-career-change/

Thanks.

And bred by Elizabeth Callahan, who is (or was?) a COTH-er.

:sob: :sob: Oh I just loved him as a stallion. But I understand.

I hope to follow him in his new journey.
