Eventer Joris Vanspringel of Belgium Suspnded for abuse of pony

Awful; https://horsesport.com/horse-news/eventer-suspended-nine-months-alleged-pony-abuse/

Poor pony. Poor kid. What a horrible thing to do. :frowning:

How awful. I can’t imagine what it was like for that poor child to witness that. I hope the pony has recovered.

This is one of the problems of how to speak up to a clinician, when the rider doesn’t agree with what is happening. But that poor little girl at her age could not have taken control of this situation.

In spite of his claim that he’s never done anything like that before, I sort of don’t believe that a man of 56 abuses a pony or horse so severely for the first time ever in his life.

I too do not believe that is how one debuts their abusive actions.

:no::no::no: Too horrible! So sad for the child to have witnessed that. It’s good the parent had the presence of mind to document it so a formal complaint could be made.

I highly doubt it’s the first time he’s beaten a pony. First time he’s been caught maybe.

Jeez. That’s pretty bad. ā€œFirst timeā€Ā I wonder.

Poor kid, poor pony.
Not the first time I’ve seen or heard of that happening in a lesson or a clinic. It always makes me sad

Jesus, that’s worse than I was picturing. The raked spur marks are as bad, or worse than the whip welts.

Poor pony

ā€œI felt very sad after reading the complaint….ā€ ā€œ[T]his has never happened to me before.ā€ ā€œThis will never happen to me againā€.

This didn’t happen to him, he happened to the pony. That poor thing. SMH

The only thing about this accident that has never happened before is it has not been caught on video and it has not been reported. Absolutely disgusting. Poor pony and poor kid, I hope they can both mentally recover from that.

Horrid behaviour. What about questioning why the pony wouldn’t jump, like a pain issue instead of beating the snot out of it.

Exactly. And that’s what he is sorry about, that he was caught. I’m glad he was unsuccessful in getting the suspension postponed until after the European Championships too.

His response was NOT in any way an apology. He cited his past record, his career, his horsemanship… what an example of how not to acknowledge responsibility.

Don’t forget ā€œthe kid did itā€ line there either

How horrible, that poor, poor pony. And I agree, that was NOT an apology, and I highly doubt it is the ā€˜first time’.
Poor little creature.

Yes. That is almost as despicable as beating the pony in the first place. I hope the poor pony has recovered. How traumatic it would have been for the pony (and the child).

And I hope that the incident is publicized enough that he looses clinic business in future. What a monster.

Have any of you ever broken a whip on a horse?

I certainly haven’t. Not even on a pony.
