Eventers Jordan McDonald and Benjamin Winter have died due to rotational falls

I can’t believe some of the comments following Benjamin Winter’s accident (not here but in some of the German press and so called social media!) It is sad enough his parents lost their son they should really not have to face this kind of thoughtless anti-eventing propaganda from people who are clearly missing the utter basics of human social interaction :frowning:
The indication that MPs course-building had anything to do with the accident is also way off base. The fence in question has been in that course for 6 years and never been complicated. Accidents happen. Yes it is tragic that a young rider died prematurely but what I find even more tragic is that nobody of the non-riding haters seems to respect the victim’s love of the sport and instead people are abusing the incidence for their malevolent anti-equestrian statements which is clearly disrespectful to him and his family. Very sad state we’ve come to in the 21st century…

I am sad to hear of the nonsense that you say is being spouted in Germany.
I’m sure that we have had it’s equal in absurdity here in the U.S…

At a time when MOST people send their condolences and best wishes, there seem to be those who will use tragedy to try to give credence to their agenda.

Too bad for those heartless people, because they are hurting the people in whose name they are claiming foul. They must KNOW that they are hurting the loved ones of riders that have died, they HAVE to, and that is an attitude that I will never understand and one that (I hope) COTHers will never let slide…

Does anyone know the type of fence Jordan fell at? Can’t seem to find this info anywhere.

On the other thread, brindille posted:
Might be off topic now, but it looks like Jordan died at a log and not a table. It seems like most rotations are tables (why don’t we just do away with them?!), but like others said, other jumps can produce the same types of falls.

"Event spokeswoman Lucy Johnson said: “The initial report indicates that the horse may have left a leg at the fence; a thorough investigation is currently underway. The fence, which was a log fence, was the first part of a combination which has been jumped hundreds of times over the past three years in courses at both Pony Club and BE Affiliated one day events.”

I’m not sure I agree with Kareen about the jump. If, as posted here, there were two horse falls at the fence at the Euro Championshipsa few years back and none since until Saturday’s fall, wouldn’t it most likely have been changed in some way to make it safer? The year there were the 2 or 3 rotational falls at the same fence at Rolex (The Hollow), that complex was dramatically changed for the next year and there have been no rotational falls since that I’m aware of. If Fence 20 at Luhmuhlen wasn’t changed, then IMO, the course designer has to take some of the blame.

How awful that the anti eventing groups didn’t show compassion for the family of this young and talented rider! May karma bite some of them in the ass in the future.

Thank you.
