Eventing at 2016 Olympics in Rio
JP60, let’s agree!

I would not take a horse down there. I’d be in a multi-day panic attack if I did.
And I with you.

I get, at some level there is this sense that competing at a global event has some gravitas, but in our world, when we have 4* events every year, we have WEG…

The Olympics were about the best of Amateurs and that…well that died so when there is the possibility that a horse could be a risk, when there are so many other better international venues to showcase talent…what is the Olympics today? The same old professionals duking it out, not the fresh amateurs proving they are ready. They do it on a soft course and they only do it every four years.

I would not take my horse to Rio. I do not care if I never wore a red coat, my horse matters more.

As some one whose horse IS on their way to RIO. That article is crap and out dated. There is No risk of Glanders for the Rio bound horses unless a competing horse brings it which is NOT really a risk at all. The center is clean and has been for a year, no other horses or even people will be in and out unless they are competing.

Riders and grooms are housed with the horses. The ONLY concern I had as an owner was my own safety getting to and from the venues…which given the number of soldiers out there offering safety, such concern of mine is gone. I’m not personally attending because my horse is traveling reserve. If he doesn’t run, he will compete at Burghley. I couldn’t be away from work long enough to go to both so I’m gambling he will run at Burghly. But as to the Horse, rider or groom’s safety at RIO…I’m not worried at all.

So the reporter is wrong?

http://www.paulickreport.com/horse-care-category/vet-topics/two-horses-olympic-equestrian-complex-euthanized-due-glanders/

The date is 7/27/2016

As the start of opening ceremonies this year’s Olympics in Brazil approaches, two horses were euthanized at the Deodoro Military Complex in Rio de Janiero, where the Olympic equestrian activities will be held. According to The Wall Street Journal, the two horses were suffering from glanders, a contagious disease which has been eradicated in many other parts of the world.

The byline date on the WaPo articel is 7/25/2016

The head line?

Brazil Fights Another Epidemic Before Olympics

I had read an article a year ago that had talked about this and that they were bent on cleaning it up. The reporter did not say two horses were euthanized a year ago, but made it fairly clear it was recent.

I made the referral to the sailing venue to point out that what Rio officials say and what they do are two different things. I am glad you are not worried, but don’t bite my head off for pointing out a current article on horse safety going into Rio. I wish the best for your horse at Burghley.

Yes, the Paulick Report article is poorly written. At the end of the Paulick Report article, it states “Read More at the Wall Street Journal” with a link to the WSJ’s article about the matter. It’s pretty clear that the Paulick Report just summarized the WSJ article.

In the WSJ article, it doesn’t give specific dates as to when the two horses at Deodoro were euthanized but implies it was sometime over the past two years. Here is an excerpt:

"Highly contagious and incurable, glanders has prompted Brazilian agricultural officials to destroy hundreds of horses across the country over the past couple of years in an effort to stop the epidemic. That has infuriated some Brazilian breeders who say the threat is overblown.

Among those euthanized were two horses that had been housed at western Rio’s Deodoro Military Complex, where the Olympic equestrian events will be held."

So everyone can stop panicking, Glanders wasn’t discovered at Deodoro yesterday. Paulick Report just did a piss poor job using their reading comprehension.

Thanks BFNE and GOOD LUCK!

DC and BFNE, thank you. While there do seem to be some legitimate health concerns (especially if you’re an open water swimmer or a pregnant woman) the media seems determined to liken a trip to the Rio Olympics with dumpster diving in the Ebola hot zone.

Certainly, every horse owner needs to consider the risks and learn what is being done to mitigate them, but publishing articles without fact checking is irresponsible.

BFNE-which horse going is yours? muggle? Or is that another poster?

Muggle–he’s now owned by a small syndicate (but I’m part of that too).

Just hoping for a good safe competition for everyone! Wish I didn’t have to work for a living and could be there! Even with hotels costing an arm and leg…

What is the status on the drinking water for horses and athletes? Also, are the reports about the conditions of the water the sailing events, etc. are taking place in accurate? (not passing contaminants standards/sewage)?

Here is an official page from NBC about their coverage.

I do not see anything on there about when and on what channel equestrian events will be shown (if they bother at all - they usually don’t)

BFNE, that is why I said “if” the article is correct. Glad there is no hazard, and I hope your horse has a safe, successful journey.

Thanks! He’s arrived safe and sound! Nilson and Laura are doing a good job up loading pictures to the Muggle Club (Private Facebook group set up for fundraising). Social media may have its issues but for events like this it’s fun to see all the behind the scenes things being posted by everyone there!!

Excited to see that XC and stadium rounds will be broadcast LIVE on USA Network!!

OK it is Friday morning, according to EN, everyone presented was passed on first inspection. They have a more detailed account. According to the riders, it is a tremendous facility and is actually luxurious. Roomy stalls good bedding, and wonderful grass to eat and gallop over.
Riders get to stay in the Olympic village with the other athletes.

My horse’s groom live Facebook video posted the jog (just a few horses). Was fun to see. Also have posted videos walking through the barns. Looks well set up. Everyone seems to be having fun and horses seem happy!

BFNE, you have a horse running the course – what did you think of it?

Andreas Osholt is out and Julia Krajewski is in for Germany.
