Eventing at 2016 Olympics in Rio

The naming of the US team yesterday triggered me to look for more specific info on the upcoming competition - like, if cross country is on a week day, I better schedule a vacation day now because I’m not going to be productive at work!

Here’s the link to the main Equestrian page:
https://www.rio2016.com/en/equestrian
(not much there, targeted to the casual spectator)

For eventing, it appears the schedule is:
Sat, Aug 6, Dressage
Sun, Aug 7, Dressage
Mon, Aug 8, Cross Country
Tue, Aug 9, Stadium - Team and Individual Medals to be awarded

It looks like events start at 10am local time which is one hour ahead of US Eastern and four hours ahead of US Pacific.

Hopefully, this will be a thread where we can share info and discuss the competition overall.

The jog for the eventing competition will be on Fri, Aug 5.

Last olympic games I was working for the USEA and was able to unabashedly stream all day at work while I worked on other things. Don’t think that will be the case now that I work for a software corporation

Here is an official page from NBC about their coverage.

anyone know what the coverage will be in Canada?

I am SO excited about the Olympics. We’re having an Olympics party at work on the Friday, woop woop!!

Looks like TSN and Cbc have the broadcast rights but I’m having trouble finding any kind of a schedule.

Hopefully they will do similar to Sochi and have online streams for sports that aren’t getting normal on air coverage.

Eta: I just downloaded the CBC Rio app - they have a video called “Equestrian 101” so hopefully if they are trying to educate on our sport, that means it will be broadcast.

I didn’t see equestrian mentioned anywhere

Does anyone know when the horses actually fly down to Rio? I imagine they must go down several days in advance to acclimatize and recover from jet lag etc.

Most are going down end of this week and over the weekend.

Many will have probably already seen this, but here’s a blog being written by Will Connell who is USEF Director of Sport Programs - talking about the logistics of getting all the stuff there and getting setup.

Looks like everything is streamed: http://www.nbcolympics.com/live-stream-schedule/equestrian?day=1

It’s kinda hard to find, but if you go to the calendar and then click each day and then filter to equestrian it gives times for streams. What I can’t figure out is if anyone can stream the “weird” off-channel sports or if there is some sort of login required.

I thank you for posting this list. But I only see the equestrian listed for ‘streaming.’ Does that mean it won’t be on TV at all, unless we win a medal, and they show it on the evening feed?
They have boo koo stations and it looks like I have them all, but I don’t see eq under any of them. In a way, it would be better as we could watch it uninterrupted, but I don’t know how to/if you can download/record the live stream.

I’d worry about the pollution. Will the water be as bad as that which the swimmers have to go through? All the human feces and all, ugh!

Is it worth the risk?

I read about this many months ago and raised the concern of bringing very expensive and talented horses into an environment such is Rio. WHile the “promise” to disenfect was made oh so many months ago, we now have this:

As the start of opening ceremonies this year’s Olympics in Brazil approaches, two horses were euthanized at the Deodoro Military Complex in Rio de Janiero, where the Olympic equestrian activities will be held. According to The Wall Street Journal, the two horses were suffering from glanders, a contagious disease which has been eradicated in many other parts of the world.

If anyone has been following the sailing events, they will be sailing in a toxic stew that according to an AP report, one teaspoon of the water has a 99% infection rate. They never even tried to clean it up. Rio olympic officials promised they would have those stalls cleaned out, then this happens. Can they even be trusted?

If the horses are already down there I pray that no one gets sick, but if I was an owner of any of those horses, do I want to get a ticket in that dark lottery? Winning is losing.

JP60, let’s agree!

I would not take a horse down there. I’d be in a multi-day panic attack if I did.

Did you all see this?

Thoughts on glanders and the causative agent Burkholderia mallei:

  1. Glanders is the only equine (zoonotic) disease on the USDA top seven list for preventing entry into the USA (all others, are diseases of swine or ruminants),
  2. Glanders was thought to have been one of the first biological weapons (WWI), and 3) Glanders has surfaced not only in Brazil, but also in Europe within the last two years (and the report above is not the first report within this time period) and having an economic impact on exports.

Here are a couple of good articles on the disease and possible impacts:

http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/glanders/glanders.html
http://www.eurodressage.com/equestrian/2015/02/28/how-glanders-germany-has-affected-global-transportation

Information purposes only; I’m not attempting to fear monger…the second article is not peer-reviewed and interviews individuals with a clear conflict of interest…just saying.

I read that report today, too. If the information is correct, I would not send my horse. Heck, we’re careful here in the US about barn quarantines for strangles. I can’t imagine sending a horse into facilities that have recently “hosted” animals with contagious, fatal diseases.

Yeah, and the possibility of them bringing it back here. Awesome.
