Eventing Barns in Michigan?

Asking for a friend as I’m not familiar with the area at all. She is moving to northern Oakland County, MI. Looking for a barn to board her horse and have her daughter take lessons. Any help appreciated!

bump

TEAM (The Eventing Association of Michigan) is a great resource for eventing opportunities around the metro-Detroit area.

Depending on where you land in Oakland County, there are a variety of options…
I was in Southwest Oakland (South Lyon/Plymouth) when I lived in that area and boarded/trained with Brittany Weber of Equijenn International. Can’t say enough good things about her program and the people in it!

I 2nd Brittany Weber of Equijenn but I believe shes more towards Ann Arbor area. Hunters Run in Metamora is a really nice facility and has a great course & super nice owners.

Thank you for the responses. I believe Brittany Weber is too far away (although there is no boarding/training/location info on the website?) and Hunters Run seems to just provide boarding and no training. Back to square one. She will be in northern Oakland County - Clarkston or Oxford area.

Will Davis at Rattlewood Farm in Oxford teaches both jumping and dressage, though not specifically eventing. The farm is huge (it’s the former Red Bob Farm) with tons of space to hack. Will is in Florida right now but you can message him through his FB.

Most of Equijenn’s up to date info is on their Facebook page. However, driving to Plymouth/Ann Arbor from Clarkston will likely be too far. Cobblestone Farms is in the Dexter area (also too far), but they have a lovely XC course and host many local shows/clinics.

Thank you all. She knows of Will Davis - but like you said - he doesn’t really teach eventing nor does he or his barn go to eventing shows. Ann Arbor would be over an hour - and when you own your horse that’s just too far to go multiple times per week. Eventing barns in this part of Michigan seems to be scarce. Lots of dressage and jumping barns. I feel so badly for her. Thank you for the responses.

I’d send a note to Sue Emmons at Hunters Run. They used to have a trainer there several years ago, but she’d certainly know who was in the area. Lots of eventers make do just fine with dressage and jumping barns and haul out or do cliics with straight eventing trainers. I’ve done it frequently and you just make it work if there isn’t one in your area.

Coincidentally this popped up on FB. Don’t know the person or exact location though.

You could also message Emily Nett on FB, or Jamie McAllister. I believe they are both up that way and do some teaching and/or boarding. Maybe someone with the Metamora Hunt Club (http://www.metamorahunt.com/) would have other ideas. I’m near Ann Arbor also, so don’t really know who else is up that way. Good luck!

Looks like a nice place~ I think Macomb is a suburb of Detroit.

What about Susan Moesner? Is she in that area?

She schooled me at an event years ago and was extremely helpful, but that’s the limit of my experience with her.

I had a friend years ago that rode with Sue and said wonderful things about her. I forget where she is but you could google her.

If I ever get my act together I’d love to ride with her again. But at the moment horsey still can’t steer so…

Sue Moessner is just down the road from Cobblestone in Ann Arbor, so likely also too far. Please contact Sue Emmons (Hunter’s Run Farm)- she can put you in touch with people who teach out of her facility. She and her husband, Dave, are terrific people and it’s an awesome facility! You might also contact Bethany Hutchins/Haven Valley Farm- they are near to Hunter’s Run and would be a good local resource.

Sue is one of the nicest people! Lovely place as well.

Anything in Western Michigan?

In West Michigan, I ride with Kate Scheltema at Green Gables in Caledonia and really enjoy the barn & training. There is also Erika Treis Peterson at Great Lakes Equestrian Center in Holland & Lone Tree Stables in Rockford (out of Philippa Humphreys old farm) that I know are great farms/good people. There is also Chardon Valley & Derbyshire south of us, out of Decatur & Stevensville but I don’t know a lot of about them.
