Eventing Barns in South Florida?

Hi All,

I will be moving to south Florida in a couple of months to start a new job and need to find a barn for my mare! I will be based primarily at Calder Racecourse in Miami Gardens for my work and so am hoping to find a barn fairly close by. Primary requirements are reliable, consistent care; a decent amount of turnout; and a place to ride with good footing and some jumping available. Doesn’t need to be a big eventing barn, but as we are eventers, being with some other eventers would be nice if possible. I will be heading down there for a few days later this month and would like to find some places to check out.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I know of so few eventing places in south Florida. Isn’t Marcia Kulak there part of the year? I can’t remember.

When I visited my stores in the area a few months ago, I asked about the eventing action, and they all shrugged and said that they don’t know of any barns that cater to eventers. I know we had a pony clubber who came from West Palm Beach and was an upper level eventer, but I think she had to commute quite a ways for lessons.

Marcia is based in Wellington for the winters which does not have eventing facilities, though with WEF and a bunch of local organizations (Palm Beach County Horsemanship Association, mark wonderley shows at Jim Brandon equestrian center) there are plenty of opportunities to do dressage and jumpers. And there are miles of canal banks to condition on…When I lived in Wellington and would haul the 4 hrs one way to Ocala to school with Ralph Hill at Longwood South… It got to be expensive especially trying to maintain prelim/intermediate levels…so I switched to jumpers after 2 yrs of doing that trek…

There is an equestrian community in Palm Beach Gardens called Caloosa that has some low level fences (think starter to BN maybe a novice level coop) but as far as I know, nothing else has been built for xc in that area…

Don’t know of any eventing facilities. You might get in touch with The Palm Beach Hounds foxhunting, hunter paces , etc . Pbhounds.com

There is almost nothing in S. Florida for eventers. If you want to trailer there are some UL trainers in central FL or more north. Even now if I want to school xc its an hour from central FL and 2.5 from the east coast.

Just to clarify - I know there’s not much eventing in South Florida. I don’t need a place with an extensive (or really any) XC course, or with someone to be in training with. Mostly, I need a barn to keep my young horse at where I can depend on the care, and it would just be a bonus if there were a couple of other eventers there. With my work schedule, it will likely be a year before I’m thinking about another horse trials anyway!

So if anyone can think of any particular barns that they would recommend (a reasonable amount of turnout especially is a requirement), I would really appreciate it! Perhaps I should also cross-post this in the HJ forum, as that seems to be more of what is in that area…

Bumping this up to ask if it is still true that there is basically no eventing in that area. I’m planning a month in Wellington this winter and would love to do something other than dressage with my versatile young horse while we’re there. Will definitely try to cap with Palm Beach Hounds!

There isn’t much at all for eventing. I just moved from there and mostly did dressage. I didn’t find another eventer there in the 2 years I lived there. I highly recommend Cameo Farms in Southwest Ranches. I wanted 24/7 turnout and this was the closest I got. They take great care of the horses and have jumps and nice front field.

I don’t think there’s anything! I’m in Wellington, primarily dressage as the one horse I evented had to be retired, but I still stay abreast of the eventing world and have heard of nothing here (other than the “Showcase”). I don’t even see any xc in fields (although most paddocks here are the size of postage stamps).
