Eventing Nation booted from covering Event in Unionville, PA

Am I? I’m not so sure about that since you are now introducing the police and a traffic stop whereas I merely introduced an accident due to botox and a fear of needles and whether a BIPOC person would have been given such white lilly treatment by the justice system. Think about it. What BIPOC person could have defended themselves with such an argument? Really, think about what you are saying here. You are deflecting by comparing this to a traffic stop. Let’s stay on point. Are you actually saying that yes, you believe that a BIPOC person could have used Leslie’s defense for getting in a traffic accident and killing a school teacher and gotten the same outcome? Do you really believe that? Because I honestly do not. And see, if you DO believe it, then you are basically saying that there is no systemic racism, which contradicts the need to name Plantation field.

We can agree to disagree, but please do not take this off course by introducing some new aspect that I never even stated. Do you go this off course when you’re competing, or just on these forums?

Wait, the emails were posted? Here?

As someone whose biggest nightmare is having something happen to me while driving and injuring myself or someone else because of it (like talking panic attacks while driving here, I’m terrified of losing consciousness and control in a car), I am HURTING for Leslie having to go through that. And envious of people who don’t realize things like that can happen. All it takes is one second.

Yes and then deleted. Started on Aug 24th. Denis’ was extremely angry and Boyd was more than willing to work with EN and act as a go between for a solution.

To her email to Boyd she cited a NYT article from July about places with plantation in the name were being asked to reconsider. All well and good but while discussing that with regards to PF, she said what I quoted in my post. Honestly the emails make Denis look not so good, Boyd look great, and Leslie looks over the top with the use of hyperbole.

Surprised no one has linked today’s article with Boyd.

He states he believes all sides handled things badly, he understands there are valid concerns about the name, he supports EN in general and he didn’t fully consider the impact of his SM posts until after the fact. There’s a lot more info on his perspective in the article.

“all it takes is one second”

???

that one second can cost you or others their lives - that risk is not acceptable.

In Ontario, a medical doctor would have a legal obligation to inform the Ministry of Transportation, that a patient has a condition that may result in loss of consciousness or other medical condition that makes it unsafe for that person to drive, and his/her license would be revoked.

Unfortunately this sometimes means that drivers whose medical condition is well controlled with medication have to jump through hoops to regain their driver’s license. but it does keep many drivers who may suffer a seizure or other medical condition while driving, off the road.

From personal experience, as my mother’s dementia progressed, i was grateful to the doctor who sent the letter to the Ministry of Transportation, revoking my mother’s driver’s license. She only drove 1 - 2 miles from home, on local roads, to grocery store, doctor office, etc. but it terrified me and only a doctor has the power to revoke the license.

That was in reference to an unfortunately titled article that was published earlier this year when Maya Black won two classes at the event. The title of the article has been modified by the website that posted it – after pushback from commenters – but the inclusion of it in Leslie’s email reflects, again, her concern that a non-equestrian media entity could pick up on it. In that case, they would be likely to take it as considerably more offensive than anyone within the industry who is buffered by context.

What was the original title?

I think the fact that this discussion has turned to a free for all of someone’s medical condition and speculation of her character related to it is absolutely reprehensible. There are a few people here who should be absolutely ashamed- this thread really reflects on the morals and character of a few posters here. Shame on you all.

The recent death of her father and the injuries sustained by her mother are very sad. I fervently hope her mother’s surgery is successful and she makes a full recovery.

This is relevant to the discussion of a horse show how?

“Black wins at Plantation”

At least I think that is what the title originally was.

I was pleasantly surprised by Boyd’s comments in the article. I was really disappointed in some of his earlier social media posts.

Wow. I don’t understand how it didn’t come up earlier in 57 pages of comments that there had actually been some discussion in June about how the name of the event in some contexts can appear racially insensitive to people other than EN/LW. Interestingly the headline was for an article in COTH (I just looked it up) and you can still see the comments on the FB article. Perhaps that is what actually started EN thinking about requesting the name change.

I agree with you that it would have been exceptionally difficult for a BIPOC person to use that defense. But that is not a problem with the defense. That is a problem with how we treat BIPOC people. Everyone deserves to have a fair trial, deserves to subpoena whoever can support the facts of the case, deserves to have those witnesses be believed, and deserves to receive a judgement based on those facts. Everyone.

”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹Regarding the fatal accident, I reserve my sympathy for the woman who was killed, her two children who witnessed their mother’s death and who were also injured, her husband who lost his wife, her family, friends, colleagues and community. Their loss was orders of magnitude greater than that of the offending driver. Three years of probation and a remarkably small settlement to the bereaved family doesn’t compare. Particularly in light of Ms. Leslie Wylie Bateman’s physician stating that if she had shared her history of fainting when exposed to needles the practice would have required that she be driven to and from the procedure to have her crow’s feet treated with Botox.

”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹If Mr. Walker is judged a racist, then Ms. Wylie Bateman is demonstrably reckless.

Yes, actually. If one is so strident as to anger instead of educate, so vitriolic as to offend vs. gaining an ally, yes. All.day long and 50+ pages later, yes.

Did none of you grow up with parental units whose defacto answer to a question, was one of two options:

 • “No.... Case closed.”
 • “But why? Because I am your mother/father. Case closed.”
If one is trying to make change, perhaps one should take one of the courses on Dale Carnegie's, "Principles To Win Friends & Influence People":
 • Don't Criticize, Condemn or Complain
 • Begin In A Friendly Manner
 • The Only Way To Get The Best Of An Argument Is To Avoid It
 • Show Respect For The Other Person's Opinion.
 • Never Say, "You're Wrong."
 • If You Are Wrong Admit It Quickly And Emphatically
 • Try Honestly To See Things From The Other Person's Point Of View
 • Be Sympathetic With The Other Person's Ideas And Desires
 • Let The Other Person Save Face
Some tact and diplomacy would have gone a long way here.

And since I believe that dealing with people is a lot like dealing with horses, one does not pick a fight with a horse….unless you are SURE you can win the fight.

To get a difficult horse to do the trainer’s bidding, you start with small steps and reward progress towards the end goal. People are no different than horses.

I believe the headline was “Black wins Plantation” – which was unfortunate on so many levels…
