Is there really any eventing on Long Island? Any competitions? There must be some eventing barns, yes? If so, where are they, and where do riders go to compete?
I evented off Long Island 30 years ago. It was tough. There were a few small schooling competitions locally, but, for the most part, we hauled to NJ. It was easiest to go though Brooklyn to get there. We also did some competitions in CT and Upstate NY. Look into where Smithtown Hunt is based for possible barns.
Thank you!
Pretty much non-existent nowadays. Country Farms (I think in Medford?) runs a couple of very small events every year, they have a big flat field that has some small permanent jumps on it, its nice for someone starting out but I wouldn’t call it real eventing.
I’m not in the loop anymore, but I was looking for eventing barns on Long Island about eight years ago and was told that Long Island is an eventing wasteland. People I rode with didn’t even know what eventing was, and I doubt it has improved since then. You would most likely have to go to New Jersey, Connecticut, or upstate New York, which means dealing with hellish traffic on the bridges and crossings.
You might find a hunter pace somewhere–possibly through what used to be known as Caumsett and is now called the Lloyd Harbor Equestrian Center. They have a hunter pace listed on their Facebook page–I can’t find a website for them.
Good luck.
Agree with charger 75. LI is not the place for eventing, you are lucky to find an outside course! LHEC does not have a website, but Meadow Brook Hounds Pony Club holds an annual hunter pace at Caumsett in the fall and occasionally the Smithtown Hunt will also hold a hunter pace at Caumsett.
Sadly, if you want to event you need to leave Long Island.
FYI Caumsett is the state park, LHEC is located within the park.
