Eventing sire suggestions for TB mare?

Looking for suggestions! I am hoping to produce something to event in the mid/upper levels (honestly, I’ll probably only get to prelim but who doesn’t want the option to go higher?) and amateur friendly… I’m a competent rider and like a bit of spice but I like hacking on a long rein too! My mare in full thoroughbred (Demons Begone/Lord Avie) but big: just shy of 17hh and built (picture below). Lovely calm temperament but willing to go when asked, smart and brave. We went to training level, could have gone higher if a racing injury hadn’t caught up with her.

She needs improvement in the quality of canter and front legs can look a bit over at the knee when she’s in a new place and forgets to stand on them properly, and a bit of a roach back has appeared now that she’s retired. She had a colt by Valentino last year who is on the small side (13.1 at 10 months), though that could be from the combination of first foal and colic surgery at 36 hours old. He seems to have inherited her temperament and willingness to work.

So basically looking for a stallion that:
-Produces temperament and rideability
-Improves canter and front legs
-Adds scope and some height (or at least doesn’t take height away, I’d like something 16-17hh)
-Doesn’t add too much substance, I like her build
-Available to ship to Canada
-I’d like to stick with warmbloods that have a some blood (30-50%), not attached to any particular registry
-And of course, lots of chrome  though I now have 3 bays with 2 hind whites and a face marking, so my dream of 4 stocking and a blaze may be a pipe dream

Thanks everyone! Looking forward to seeing suggestions!

number 1 in the world rankings for eventing, physically a good offset to your longer, heavier mare.

Do you have photos of the Valentino? I actually think he’s a great cross for this type of mare & good bloodlines for an event horse or hunter. Besides being small, thoughts?

I could not be happier with my C.Quito/TB gelding (out of my TB mare). He floats over the ground and while we have not jumped him much yet he shows loads of promise, he’s a lovely type.

What about the Trakehner Tatendrang? There are lots of Tater Tots showing in eventing right now.

Are you able about to visit Dreamscape farm? I think I’d have to check out Checkmate but maybe he would work? He looks a little narrow in his young days from the website, which isn’t my first choice if there are any concerns over front limbs. Or delta Force? I don’t see much recent footage so I can’t suggest them but she is in Canada. Lestat is interesting, I like Lordanos. Would be a good trip with all those nice stallions.

A personal favorite but Grey is Quidam Blue.

Does A Fine Romances owner stand any stallions? Fred was lovely, he has one son I saw but I don’t think she’s exactly right for this mare. But perhaps there are others?

Are you thinking of Darwin?

I am not sure if his other son owned by AFR’s owner is standing to public. Maybe we can get his owner to chime in.

I second Contendro. Excellent choice and a good fit, given the “shortcomings” you mentioned in your mare.

Quite Easy is another stallion that I have seen improve back, hindquarters, and absolutely adds scope. I have seen him cross very well with TB mares and I don’t think you would get heavier.

Sadly I don’t know if you would get bling with either of the stallions mentioned.

Someone mentioned Tatendrang. A great fit for TBs, I am a huge fan of this stallion. He will improve temperament. I don’t think you’d get chromey. He would also improve canter, and scope.

Funny, all the stallions suggested so far have been bays with minimal to no white.

As an aside, when being over at the knee is present in a horse that raced, is usually a result of tendon remodeling from the stressors of racing, not in itself a conformation issue. I find that it is usually seen in horses with awful front shoeing angles. From the picture you gave, I don’t see much of a flaw with your mare in terms of her front limbs.

I think Darwin is the only AFR son standing publicly. If there were another, more proven, son I think we’d hear about it a lot because AFR was so successful.

Someone mentioned Checkmate up thread. All the ones I’ve known have been very tall and leggy with good brains. Might be too much height for the OP, though?

If you want to avoid falling in love, do not check out Tatendrang’s Facebook page and his newest photos. Such a handsome boy. https://www.facebook.com/Tatendrang/

Gosh guys I’m blushing. And OMare you made me laugh out loud.

tate will tick all your boxes except the chrome. He won’t suppress it if the mare throws it but he doesn’t throw it. Tater Tots are doing well for their Amateur Owners as well as the pros.
