How long would the normal daily gallop be for a horse targeted for a 1 1/16 race?
There are no rules but as an average I would say in the range of a mile and a half to two miles with a half mile jog to warm up beforehand.

Unless you are King L, everything hit the gap and opened gallop for a mile.
I agree a mile and a half, galloping 2 miles wouldnt be done for days in a row. The works are what is going to be important getting a horse ready to go “long”.
We gallop a mile and a half unless the horse needs to warm up to the half and gallop a mile. Very few exeptions.
We back up to the 1/8 pole and gallop once around to the 1/2. Sprint, route, Derby/Oaks prospect… a mile and a half.
Let me explain with the following examples… All barns are different!!
Barn one Normal week for most racing horses:
Monday: Jog 1 mile
Tuesday: Jog 2 miles
Weds Jog 1 Gallop 1
Thurs Jog 1/2 Gallop 1.5
Friday Jog 2 miles
Saturday Breeze (3f-5f depending on how far from a race)
Sunday: hand walk in shedrow
Barn two. Normal week for most racing horses:
All days include a 10-15 minute walk to the track up a hill. And return down the hill after.
Monday Jog 1, Gallop 1.5
tuesday Jog 1 Gallop 1.5
Weds Jog 1 Gallop 1 3/4
Thursday Jog 1 Gallop 1 3/4
Friday Jog back to gate (7/8th) Gallop from gate 1.25 miles
Saturday breeze (distance depended on readiness)
Sunday jog 2 miles or hack in woods. (only off sundays every other week)
Barn 1 won some stakes races and did well in a classic but was primarily a claiming barn. And most of our horses claimed won next time out for their new connections…
Barn 2 has won a ky derby and is a top barn in the country.

Thanks for the numbers. That is what we are doing now but since I’m new to racing I didn’t know if that was enough or not. Now if we can catch a break and not fall out of the gate or loose a shoe then maybe we’ll be okay.

I agree but not only the barn but IMO more importantly the horse. Some need more work then others. All things being equal nothing to do with their level of fitness. I seem to remember the late great Sidney Watters saying to an exercise rider when asked if he wanted the horse jogged a mile, " I’m not training trotters, warm him a ½ and go around 2 times picking it up the 2nd.
Maybe I read it.
