So, what do you guys normally where to go for a drive in? Obviously footwear can be covered with paddock boots, and the sunshirts from my riding days are just fine, but what about pants? Jeans should work in the winter, but in 115 Texas summers they could be unpleasant. Shorts are an option, but my Northern European skin is already lodging a protest at the idea of long term exposure to the sun. Leggings? The workout kind with the vents? Just keep wearing the riding pants? What is your go to?
I hate wearing shorts around the farm. I’m also usuallly working so I don’t like it when the hay scratches my legs, the flies bite me and I’m super pale so I burn like nobodys buisness!!
On the hot days I tend to still wear my jeans (and yes, I’m in Ontario but we get 100F + days and super high humidity as well), or just my breeches if I’ve just ridden. Leggings would work as well. I don’t see any issue with wearing those at all!
Assuming you’re talking about what to wear in the cart, right?
I normally just go with my summer-weight breeches or jeans.
Shorts are tempting, but guarantee you will drive through something that will scratch the bejeezis out of your legs.
I wear either my paddock boots or sport (gym) shoes.
Footwear needs to hold up to getting muddy and/or wet as there will be a time you need to get out of the cart aside from hitching/unhitching.
Ask me how I learned this…
A helmet is never a bad idea, but I admit unless I’m driving Cones, I am generally bareheaded or wearing a ball cap :uhoh:
I am talking about cart wear. Sounds like jeans might be my best bet, and just suck it up that they are hot.
A helmet was never optional for me. I make my living off what’s inside my noggin, need to keep it as safe as possible. That and my insurance has the option of not paying if I suffer an injury and was not using the industry standard protective equipment for any dangerous activity I participate in.
In summer, I usually wore either light cotton pants or capris. And I always wore a helmet, even though my profile pic was taken without it. I figured I was safe for a slow motion photo shoot.

I wear shorts! It’s one of the things that I like about driving over riding- I can drive in whatever I am wearing. I don’t recommend, however, any kind of slippery pants on a bench seat. You slide around.
Boots and a helmet.
In the summer I wear jeans and in the winter as many layers as I can get on and still be able to bend.
I don’t wear shorts when I drive as one of my minis is mouthy little sh!t and his nose hovers right around thigh level and I have been nipped while hitching. Bare skin is the devil’s temptation for that one. He’s a never ending work in progress  . . . I love him though.
I wear ododos yoga tights (Capri or regular) all summer long. They have a HUGE side pocket that holds the phone. I ride and drive in them.
Amazon, $20. Can’t go wrong!
I am not driving right now, but I do work with my horse a lot with out driving. I love athletic wear. Covers the legs, but can be very breathable. If you are concerned about slipping maybe check out light weight full seat riding tights.
